I. When applying scripture, always consider God’s intent.
(CSB)
23 On the Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to make their way, picking some heads of grain.
24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
25 He said to them, “Have you never read what David and those who were with him did when he was in need and hungry—26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the Presence—which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests—and also gave some to his companions?”
Do you use scripture to advance your own agenda?

Illus: Jesus was not breaking a law of scripture, The pharisees took the command not to break the sabbath and applied it with 39 new laws.
one of those was that you could not reap your harvest.
When the disciples picked a few heads of grain, they called that reaping a harvest.
We do this today, we have a way we expect others to live, and we then proof text scripture to justify ourselves.
Lets flesh this out.
some embrace this idea of tolerance.
IN the name of tolerance, they then take texts about judge not lest you be judged, about God’s love and forgiveness and take these passages out of context.
They use these passages to support their own beliefs.
BTW we do this too.
Every text we read should be read through the question, what is God’s intent in this passage.
Scripture does not exsist to be pulled out of context and applied to our desires.
Our wants and desires should be subject to the word of God as God intended it.
(CSB) 15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

16 All Scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
The only way to apply scripture is through God’s intent.

Illus: There is nothing more dangerous than taking a partial truth, turning it for your own desires and then speaking that changed truth as your truth.
Isn’t that what happens with gossip?
we take a partial truth, turn it for what we want to say and then call it truth.
An altered truth is not a truth it is a lie.
When you take the truth of God’s word and use it for your intentions and not God’s, you are lying.
(CSB) 20 Above all, you know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from the prophet’s own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Illus: A few weeks ago, Ken Allen caught up with me while we were eating lunch and shared with me that God put it on his heart that I needed to rest.

Most mornings I wake up at 4am, run, study at 6am, work till 5 then either read theology at night or work on my doctorate till bed time.
I don’t rest well.
When I hear that there is a need at church, my first temptation is to do it myself, instead of asking for help.
Truthfully between weddings, funerals, kids events, visits, hospitals and other ministry, I went 5 month here without a day off.
Lets be clear, this is not heroic, it is sinful.
God’s intent is not that I would work myself to death, but instead that I would find the balance of life in him.
(CSB) So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed.
2 On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates.
