What is God calling his church to become?
As we look at this Chapter I have a couple of thoughts.
Pastor Cymbala talked about numbers and how we measure everything by it.
You can’t go anywhere about thinking of it and about talking about it.
Pastors measure Attendance, building and capital by the success of the church.
There is a second group of people who would argue that Numbers aren’t everything and you can’t gauge a churches health by the attendance or even the offering or maybe even the capital they have.
This usually happens when you have pastors that have a larger church then pastors you have smaller churches, but in the end we need to be a church that God want’s us to become.
I think this Chapter gives us an idea of what we need to be.
Let’s read 2 Timothy 1:7
7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
We shouldn’t be timid or fearful of what happens in our church.
We shouldn’t be fearful when we teach on things that might stir up a little emotion.
If we are not trying to move forward and become more like Jesus then everything should be on limits.
Let me ask you a questions as we have read 2 Timothy 1:7
1.
What does the Spirit give believers?
What then are the implications for the Christian life?
If the Spirit give us:
Power
Love and
Self Discipline.
How should the church measure success?
If it is not by numbers, does that mean numbers are not important?
Explain your answer.
It seems like today there are a lot of churches who have a great marketing plan for their church.
Their graphic has to have a certain look, the website has a certain look.
There are churches who hire someone whose sole job is to make sure that everything looks a certain way.
If we looked at churches and talked to other people who go to different churches the conversation might go like this.

3. Do you agree with Pastor Cymbala that in order to build the church Jesus intended, we must have a “bold, aggressive attitude in proclaiming God's Word?”
Why or why not?
Explain your answers.

4. How do you feel that Shalom is doing as far as boldly proclaiming the whole will of God within the various contexts of ministry that we have—Sunday morning, Awana, youth group, etc.?
5. Would you describe yourself as bold about proclaiming the gospel in your home, school, work, friendship circles?
Explain your answer.
6.
Is boldness a temperament issue (i.e.
you have to be “outgoing” to be bold) or a spiritual issue?
How does one gain boldness?
You’ve been here before but take a look at to see where the early church went to find boldness.
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Hey how do you like your church?
I love my church we have amazing worship we run about 1,000.
And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

Explain your answer.
7. What is the effect if the church is not bold in speaking about sin, repentance, grace, and salvation through Jesus Christ alone?
Jim Cymbala writes, “The truth is that ‘user-friendly’ can be a cover up for carnality.
The same people who want sixty-minute worship services rent two-hour movies and watch NBA and NFL games that run even longer.
The issue is not length, but appetite.
Why the misplaced desire?” (p.
132)
8. What do you think of what he says?
Do you agree or disagree?
9. Why is there a lack of appetite among Christians for God and His Word?
How is an appetite stirred in a Christian that has stopped hungering for God?
together.
When you get around other pastors usually you have this question.
“Tell me about your church?
How is the Lord’s work coming along there?
Things are going great we are running about 10,000.
We have had set new giving records over this past year.
10. Cymbala feels that churches are so programmed that “God couldn’t break in if he wanted.”
(p.
134).
What do you think he means by that?
I love how the book puts it Attendance, Building and Cash the new Holy Trinity in the church.
Now let me put it this way Attendance, building and cash are they terrible things?
11.
What do we who are a part of Shalom need to do to ensure our plans doesn’t stifle the work of God at a given gathering?
No
I don’t believe they are terrible, but what happens is when we place more value in these three things then it becomes a bad thing.
To many times we place more value in attendance, money and buildings then we do in what God is doing in the midst.
Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
12. How does one’s personal preparation for a worship service impact their ability to receive something fresh and powerful from God on a Sunday morning?
But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.
[1]
13. How is God challenging you to personally grow after reading and discussing this chapter?
On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues j and prophesied.
7 There were about twelve men in all.
I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name.
16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.)
“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David.
What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
8 I know your deeds.
See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.
I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.
11 I am coming soon.
Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.
12 The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God.
Never again will they leave it.
I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.
13 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
We shouldn’t measure the success of our church solely by numbers, but when we look what matters in the church.
29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.
