Good morning B.O.C.
Subject (HP):
We’re going over “Growing in the Faith” and in the last several sessions we’ve gone over learning How to study the Bible, now we’re going to jump into Following Christ
Turn you Bibles to Luke 9:23
Image:
Have you ever been lied to in order to get you do do something you didn’t want to do?
Back when I was a teenagers, my friends said they’d give me twenty bucks if I did something…watch this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgm5qh21J7w
[SLIDE2]
Need:
Turns out, my friends just wanted to mess with me, so i never got those $20.
Things like this happened a lot.
Share fear of students who aren’t living as Christians.
Have you been made fun of or persecuted because of your faith and what you believe in?
But the point I want to illustrate is that Jesus doesn’t lie to us in order to get us to do something.
He’s very up front about what it’s gonna cost to be a disciple.
Are you putting up a front when you come here?
Are you actually applying what you believe?
Body:
What I want you to keep in mind during the next several sessions is this: Following Jesus means Being like Jesus

It’s important to know how to study the Bible so The goal of studying God’s word is to learn how to APPLY IT in your daily life.
Read
God supplies it.
We APPLY IT.
“Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
Body:
How many of you have your bookmarks from last week?
We’ll utilize some of those same questions and a few of my own in our time this morning.
And since we’re good students of the Bible and know how to study it, we’ll do that with this one verse today.
I need someone to read the verse.
“Then he said.”
Stop right there.
Who said?
Jesus; how do you know that?
Context.
Keep reading… “to them all.”
To who all?
The disciples; how do you know that?
v. 18. I’m asking and being very meticulous because we should never assume who the Bible is talking about.
We want to know what the passage is saying, and what this meant to the original audience, this is important for the next part.
“if anyone desires to come after Me,” stop right there.
I want to ask you something very very VERY important.
And you can answer this to yourself.
Do you desire to follow Jesus?
i’m gonna ask you again, do you DESIRE to follow Jesus?
Do you REALLY DESIRE to follow Jesus?
IF you DESIRE to follow Jesus here’s what Jesus himself says its gonna cost you:
“let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
What are the three things Jesus says you need to do if you want to follow him?
[SLIDE4]
Deny.
Take up Cross.
Follow.
with the person closest next to you I want you to each think
Surrender.
Suffer.
Sacrifice.
So when we ask the question “What does this passage demand of you?” if you want to follow Jesus, it means To deny yourself; What does it mean to deny yourself?
[SLIDE5]
with the person closest next to you I want you to each think of one way to deny yourself, and we’ll all share together.
I’m gonna give y’all 30 seconds to think of something, but you wont share it till the end of the 30 seconds when i tell you.
What are some ways y’all thought of?
To deny yourself is to turn from your selfish ways.
We must say no to our pleasures and possessions; you have to surrender yourself to him.
Deny — Surrender
Split into groups and think of 2 ways to deny yourself for the cause of Christ.
More thought!
What else does the passage demand of you?
To take up your cross daily; What does it mean to “take up your cross”?
[SLIDE6]
with the person closest next to you I want you to each think of one way to take up your cross and we’ll all share together.
This time y’all can talk during the 30 seconds together, and combine both of your ideas into one idea.
Lets share.
Let me explain a little bit about the cross.
The cross was one of the most shameful ways one was punished.
One was also to carry their cross to the place they would be crucified.
So when we have the image of Jesus carrying his cross, this was a shameful thing.
He was being mocked, ridiculed, spat at; this is a moment of shame and Jesus still carries his cross.
When Jesus says take up your cross and follow me daily he speaks to the extent of your denial and devotion to him.
Are you willing to live unashamed of the fact that Jesus is your savior?
Are you willingly ready to be made fun of, to not be invited to go hang out with some friends, even not being liked by some of your own family members.
Are you going to take up your cross and live a life that pleases God.
The extent of your denial and devotion.
are you willing to live unashamed of the fact that Jesus is your savior?
Are you willingly ready to be made fun of, to not be invited to go hang out with some friends, even not being liked by some of your own family members.
Are you going to take up your cross and live a life that pleases God.
(There’s a you to loose, and a you to keep.
An authentic way that God wants you to live.
God wants you to suffer to the things of the world and live for Him.)?
So how does this change the way you relate to people?
Unashamed living.
It means that you suffer for the sake of the gospel.
It means that you WILL experience shame from the world for being a follower of Jesus on a regular basis; daily suffer for Jesus.
