SOVEREIGNTY—of God, his absolute right to do all things according to his own good pleasure (, ; ; ; ).
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary Sovereignty of God
SOVEREIGNTY—of God, his absolute right to do all things according to his own good pleasure (, ; ; ; ).
SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD Biblical teaching that God possesses all power and is the ruler of all things (; ).
God rules and works according to His eternal purpose, even through events that seem to contradict or oppose His rule.
Bethlehem Baptist Church Elder Affirmation of Faith
3.1 We believe that God, from all eternity, in order to display the full extent of his glory for the eternal and ever-increasing enjoyment of all who love him, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of his will, freely and unchangeably ordain and foreknow whatever comes to pass.
3.2 We believe that God upholds and governs all things — from galaxies to subatomic particles, from the forces of nature to the movements of nations, and from the public plans of politicians to the secret acts of solitary persons — all in accord with his eternal, all-wise purposes to glorify himself, yet in such a way that he never sins, nor ever condemns a person unjustly; but that his ordaining and governing all things is compatible with the moral accountability of all persons created in his image.
Baptist Faith and Message God the Father
God as father reigns with providential care of His universe, His creatures, and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of His grace.
My Definition Sovereignty of God
God’s right and ability to do whatever He wills with whatever is His for His own good pleasure.
Three Essential Truths
God sovereignly rules over nature
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”
36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was.
And other boats were with him.
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.
And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace!
Be still!”
And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid?
Have you still no faith?”
41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

God sovereignly rules of man
24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.
Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for
“ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
12 When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes.
13 For he says:
“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
and plunder their treasures;
like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
14  My hand has found like a nest
the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
so I have gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved a wing
or opened the mouth or chirped.”
15  Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it,
or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes.
For he says:
“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
The plans of the heart belong to man,
but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
and plunder their treasures;
like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
My hand has found like a nest
The heart of man plans his way,
but the LORD establishes his steps
the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
so I have gathered all the earth;
21  Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.
and there was none that moved a wing
or opened the mouth or chirped.”
Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it,
God sovereignly rules over spiritual beings
or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
God sovereignly rules over spiritual beings
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.
22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit.
And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this?
A new teaching with authority!
He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
Key Question: Does God proactively rule and reign over His creation to accomplish his plan and purpose, or does God re-actively rule and reign over His creation to preserve and protect His plan and purpose?
