Intro
Today we are going to get into one of my most favorite portions of Scripture in the whole Bible
There is more packed into these 3 chapters that I could every unpack
I really see as the pattern God layed down for How the Church is to operate in the gifts He has given,
So to remind you the foundation of everything this builds on:
We have the great Commandment
Mark 12:29-
We then have the Great Commission
Matthew
Matthew 28:16-20
Our Motivation & Method is Love; Our Mission is to Make disciples
God has called His people to make disciples
God expects us to be in the process of making disciples
I’ve shared with you my extreme vision for this Church
Now over the next while I will show you How God intends us to fulfill His destiny
I believe the Method God laid out for us to see this Church reach it’s destiny
Is the Activation and Operation of every member in the Gifts of the Spirit to carry out the great Commandment and the Great Commission
Chapters 12, 13, 14 Of 1 Corinthians deals specifically with the use of Spiritual gifts
These 3 chapters can be viewed as the 3 tests for spiritual gifts
Is it Christ Centered ( )
Is it done in Love ()
Does it Edify the Church (
Now before you begin to panic, we are not going to get through all this today
But we will be spending some time here,
This will be our focus over the next few months as we lay the foundation of this amazing church
So can I ask you to do something?
Can you make an effort to read these chapters weekly for the next few months?
I really believe it will help us as a church to focus on what God has in store for this congregation
In this chapter The apostle Paul covers
Spiritual Gifts
Idol Worship
Holy Spirit
Ministry
Baptism
Membership
Importance of everyone
Church Leadership
And a introduction to Love being primary
All that chalked up in 1 chapter
Words of wisdom: “There’s a fine line between a long, drawn-out sermon and a hostage situation.”
Some background on Paul’s letter to the Church at Corinth
Paul writes this letter to the church at Corinth because there is a problem
The problem can be summarized as Freedom verses Responsibility
Freedom had become the focus, and Responsibility has been pushed to the side.
“I am free to do whatever I want”
This mindset has overtaken the Corinthian Church and Paul writes them a letter to put them back on track
Kinda reminds you of our current cultural norms doesn’t it?
We must be careful to defend our Church against such circumstances
this becomes clear in
Many modern Christians use this verse to squash prophesy in the Church,
what they are missing is the reason why Paul said this.
In the Corinthian Church, everyone wanted to prophesy, and at the same time.
They focused on their freedom to use their gifting, and forgot about the responsibility of that gift
The purpose of the Gift was to edify the church.
but the way they were operating in the gift did not edify anything except the one speaking
Its like 10 people stood up and began talking all at the same time.....doesn’t work!
Paul was not trying to diminish prophesy, but rather bring it into order, so that it would be beneficial to all.
Prophesy Yes, but then take the time to flush it out.
Is it really a word from God? is so what should we do about it.
1 Corinthians is Paul’s attempt to bring order to a church that got so excited about Spiritual gifts they became a unintelligible noise
He encourages the use of Gifts, but also recognizes there is an order to it
Today let’s do an overview of Chapter 12
We are going to spend some time here,
This will be our focus over the next few months
So can I ask you to do something?
Can you make an effort to read this passage of scripture 1/ week for the next few months?
Wow, everybody got all that!
If not lets watch this video

Now to further expand on this passage let’s give you some background on Paul’s letter to the Church at Corinth

Freedom has become the focus, and Responsibility has been pushed to the side.
This mindset has overtaken the Corinthian Church and Paul writes them a letter to put them back on track

So today I want to focus on 1 specific aspect of the Church.
and that’s:
Body Works
and that’s Body Works
This passage has alot to say about how the body of Christ should operate.
Your Past does not matter
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Your gift is not inferior to any body else’s
For the body is not one member, but many.
If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be?
If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
