Many more simply deny its necessity.
B. Thus, we shall answer the following questions:

Is Baptism a teaching from heaven or from man?

Is baptism a part of salvation?
3. If the answer to both is “yes” (according to God’s word) then you need to respond to God’s invitation to salvation immediately.

I. Is Baptism FROM HEAVEN OR MAN?
A. Jesus asked this very question regarding (the authority of the teaching/practice of) John’s baptism.
Matt.
21:25
1.
He knew that John’s baptism was commissioned by God, hence His question.
2. They didn’t want to answer His question because an honest answer would condemn them.
3.
This question is no different than the one asked today regarding Christ’s baptism.
B. Is Christ’s baptism from heaven or from men?
1.
If from heaven – then why don’t people (as in the days of the Pharisees) believe the teaching that baptism “now saves”? 1 Pet.
3:18-21
2. If from men – then (like the Pharisees) there are many who regard the men of the New Testament as “inspired” men of God!
C. We shall look at what the inspired men of God wrote regarding the teaching of baptism.
1.
They didn’t take man’s word for it, they studied the scriptures!
2. We need to be willing to let go of man made teachings and concern ourselves solely with the divine inspiration.
II.
What Inspired Men Taught About Baptism
A. Jesus – our Lord and Savior – taught and commanded:
1.
He charged His apostles to “Go into the world making disciples, baptizing them in name of Father, Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
Matt.
28:19
2. In sending them forth, He said: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.”
Mk. 16:15-16
a.
Those who believed Jesus to be the Son of God and wanted salvation would be baptized.
b.
Those who didn’t believe would be condemned.
3. The teaching is quite simple, His disciples, and those to follow, would teach what Jesus charged.
Cp. 2 Tim.
2:2; Book of Acts
B. The apostle Peter taught and commanded:
1.
In “Going forth” Peter concluded his sermon by telling those pricked in their hearts to “repent and be baptized….”Acts
2:38-41
2. He couldn’t refuse the Gentiles the same charge as the Jews.
Acts 10:46-48
3. Thus, Peter taught that “baptism saves” in that: 1 Peter 3:18-21
a.
The person (who by faith) acknowledges Jesus to be the Christ.
b.
He manifests that faith in fulfilling Jesus’ command to be baptized.
c. His baptism is the “answer of a good conscience toward God”…
C. Philip the evangelist taught:
1. Just as Jesus declared in Mark 16:15, Luke says that “those who believed Philip preaching…were baptized, both men and women.
Acts 8:12-13.
2. The eunuch undoubtedly learned the necessity of baptism from Philip, came across water, and said “what hinders me from being baptized.”
Acts 8:35-38
D. Ananias taught:
1.
He followed in the same pattern as the other disciples.
2. He told Saul to be baptized and wash away his sins.
Acts 22:16 (Acts 9:17-19); 1 Cor.
6:11; Heb.
10:22
E. Paul (formerly Saul) taught:
1. Just as he learned, believed, and practiced by Ananias and Jesus Himself, he taught the same.
2. From his first missionary journey until his days in prison, he taught the same thing regarding salvation and baptism.
Acts 16:13-15; 25-33; 18:6-8; 19:1-5
3.
He also taught those baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death.
Rom.
6:3
a.
Those who believed were buried with Him through baptism into death.
Rom.
6:4; Col. 2:12
b.
Just as Christ rose from the dead, we rose (out of the water) to walk in newness of life.
4. He taught that those baptized into Christ have “put on Christ.”
Gal.
3:27
5.
He taught there is only one baptism (acted upon through faith and done in the name of the Lord).

CONCLUSION
A. The teaching of baptism with regard to the gospel of salvation is not a teaching of man, but directly from God.
B. Those who believed in the gospel message declared Jesus to be the risen Christ and were baptized in His name.
C. Whose teaching will you believe regarding baptism and your salvation?
