Ephesians 2:
Ephesians 2:19–22 ESV
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Christ is the Foundation & Cornerstone
Foundation of Prophets
Provided the law
The law points to God’s character
Leviticus 19:1–2 ESV
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.
b. Foundation of the Apostles
Matthew 16:15–16 ESV
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
c. Christ fulfills the prophets and apostles
Matthew 5:17 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
1 Corinthians 3:11 ESV
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
i. Christ is the foundation and cornerstone because in His humanity he succeeds where we have failed
Romans 5:18–19 ESV
Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
2. Christ is either our Cornerstone or stumbling block
When Christ is our Cornerstone we receive honor through Him
1 Peter 2:6 ESV
For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
b. Christ is a stumbling block to those who reject Him
1 Peter 2:7–8 ESV
So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
1 Peter 2:
Matthew 21:42–44 ESV
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”
3. Christ desires for us to be His church
a. God desires for us to gather together.
Matthew 18:20 ESV
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
b. Each of us is an important part of the church
1 Corinthians 14:26 ESV
What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
1 Corinthians 14:26 ESV
What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
c. Our church is called to be a blessing to the world
Genesis 22:18 ESV
and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
John 13:35 ESV
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 1:35 ESV
The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,
