What is Love: The fullness of love.

Love never Fails-
1 Corinthians 13:8–13 ESV
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Love Never fails- It will never come to an end
Love is eternal
the act of the cross is an eternal act
it Has eternally effect our lives
Ephesians 2:1–8 ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Eph 2:1-
Once we were dead But love has made us alive
1 John 4:8 ESV
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
It is His Character
it Is His motivation for us
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
The cross is that ultimate act of love that has a lasting effect in our lives
Takes us from death to life
This same gives us all the tools we need to live in this life
the word of God-
it guides
it protects
it is a light in dark times
The spirit of God
John 16:5–15 ESV
But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Jesus sent His spirit to Guide us

As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

All these are gifts of the spirit in our lives
Prophesy-

to speak under the influence of divine inspiration, with or without reference to future events

As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

Me standing here is speaking under the Spirit’s influence
These are all gifts from God-
used to help us Grow
used to guide and direct us
used to equip us so we don’t fall away
They are the continuing affect of the cross in our life
Love never ends

Every gift is linked in some way to building up the church to maturity—some (prophecy, knowledge, tongues) functioning in the early years of the Church Age and others continuing on till the church is perfected. When that perfection is achieved, the gifts will have served their purposes and will be rendered obsolete. But this will not happen to love.

Love has an eternal affect-

As Paul explained it, the gift of knowledge (v. 8), essential as it was, was not exhaustive. The ability to prophesy, however crucial for the church’s life, was of limited scope. The gifts were temporary blessings in an imperfect age. One day they would give way to perfection, toward which all the gifts pointed.

The gifts point us toward perfections
What God provided for us points us toward Himself
The gifts of Go help us grow into what He has for us
the gifts help fight everything wrong in the world
This world doesn’t need more religious people
with their religious ideas
and their religious rules
This world needs Christ followers who reflect this kind of love
The world needs people full of the Spirit speaking the words of God that:
build up
that encourage
that give life
think of all the bad in the world-
why does that happen?
Because there are people still dead in their trespasses:
they don’t have hope
they don’t know this love
they don’t know how to change
for some it takes to much to change
Just as God so loved us and Christ went to the cross for us -
he still loves this world and guides us with His Holy Spirit into this world to show the love of God
We are sent out with this love- with the gospel of Christ - the good news
2 Corinthians 5:17–21 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
God makes His appeal through His People
through you and me
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
the world is full of sin still, and God still loves it
the Church- the followers of Christ bring that love to a lost and dying world
We should be leaving an eternal affect on this world
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Mt 5:
We are the light of the world- we shine in the darkest moments-
not with religious rules
or our holier then tho arguments
but with the Love of God- that can change hearts
But when the perfect comes- When everything that we have been living for comes
When we stand before Christ
the perfection of love-
our hope isn’t in this world
we know that perfection is on it’s way
We know that this life will ends and we will be in eternity
Isaiah 25:8–9 HCSB
He will destroy death forever. The Lord God will wipe away the tears from every face and remove His people’s disgrace from the whole earth, for the Lord has spoken. On that day it will be said, “Look, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He has saved us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him. Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
We have only tasted-
we have only gotten a spoonful
but the brownies are in the oven
we have only tasted-
when we realize we are a new creation
that is just a taste
when we overcome cutting
that is just a taste
when people break the chains of addiction
that is just a taste
when marriages succeed in love
that is just a taste
there is a song that says “I’ll never know how much it cost to see my upon that cross.”
when we stand face to face with Christ - we no longer just get a taste- but we will the the eternal affect of the love of God in our life
we will truly understand
Isaiah 53:4–5 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
