Greeting/Introduction/Thank You

When Brandon and I got together a few weeks ago to discuss getting together, it was a no-brainer.

There was no way we couldn’t/shouldn’t gather together to hang, sing praise unto God, and also, hopefully, get to know one another!

What we’re doing tonight is a small celebration of the common bond that so strongly holds us together.

There is a common thread, a very similar hope that we all share, one main reason why we gather together.

The whole purpose we gather, is in similar fashion, the same purpose why churches, globally, gather on Sunday’s.

We gather to worship corporately and also individually.

We worship through our small group Bible studies, through song & music, and also through the hearing of the Word preached by pastors on Sunday’s.

We gather for the sole purpose of worshipping the LORD Jesus Christ.

And this worship is a full-on celebration.

We sing songs loudly, sometimes we clap, and we are moved and convicted by the Word preached on Sunday’s.

Sometimes our Sunday’s don’t always feel like that, like it’s a celebration, but that’s actually why we gather.

It is to first and foremost worship God as Creator, Sustainer, Provider, and Protector.

We worship Him through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ being led by the Holy Spirit from the Word of God.

But, again, sometimes this celebration is not always seen as celebration.

Sometimes, our meetings are everything we can do to hold a smile, or at least, look engaged to get through the service so we can get home or to lunch.

Well tonight, I really want to talk to you about this celebration.

I would like to share how big of a deal this celebration is when we see Jesus as Lord and Savior.

I would like to share how exciting and liberating it is to hear of what God has done through His Son.

It’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard or learned in school.

It’s unlike any movie or story you’ve seen.

There’s literally nothing like what God has accomplished and I mean accomplished through this man whom the Bible declares as the Son of God.

I give fair warning to your heart and your attention tonight as we dig into these few verses to hear, understand, and also celebrate what will be talked about tonight as The Gospel.

READ SCRIPTURE –

In tonight’s passage there’s 3 groups of people, therefore we got 3 facts to work with tonight.

Pharisees & disciples

The Culture - “no Celebrating”

“Authority.”

Roman rule.

The Conflict - “Why?”

The Conflict - “Why?”

Jesus & disciples

Them - Why don’t your disciples “fast?”

The Conclusion - “Celebrate!”

Jesus - Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?

The Conclusion - “Celebrate!”

Also, in this passage is a conflict.

The conflict is that the Pharisees don’t understand why Jesus’ disciples do not fast.

EXPLAIN FASTING

EXPLAIN WINESKINS “FERMENTATION”

Chemical breakdown of a substance bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms, typically involving effervescence and the giving off of heat.

What the Pharisees are really asking, is what I was discussing earlier about “celebration” on Sunday mornings.

Sometimes, for us, we don’t exactly believe that God has done something.

He has actually stepped into this world.

He took invisible and made it visible.

“He came to His own, but His own did not receive Him.”[1] God, who lives outside of time, did something eternal within all of our limited time.

And here’s what He did.

God created everything.

Simple, general statement, yet complex and glorious in all of its truth.

God made everything that exists, made it with purpose, and He made us.

He made us in His eternal, Holy, image.

He made us not as exact as Him, but nevertheless, He made us and gave us life and abundance.

We rebelled and rejected Him.

Because of that, there are major conflicts, violence, corruption, and pain prevalent everywhere.

Our world is cursed because of our rebellion.

What was called good and made good, has been rejected and cursed.

God has not left us, but instead joined us.

He joined the corruption, violence, and conflict.

He joined us and walked in it.

He identified with us and all of what it means to be “us.”

He knows it.

I heard it said somewhere that “all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.”[2]

Also, I heard it said that “Therefore He had to be made like his brothers in every respect, and for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”[3]

He joined us in this broken mess.

He joined us in what’s hard to understand and even sometimes explain.

Nevertheless, He joined us.

The celebration begins with this.

It begins with understanding and believing this magnificent truth that speaks to us corporately and individually.

It doesn’t end there though.

God joined us in this because of His significant plan outside of our understanding and knowledge.

God set this thing up to bring us back to Him if we would just believe in the one whom He has sent!

Because of the rebellion and rejection, a price has had to be paid, because our Creator, our God, is not just love, mercy, and grace.

He is also just, righteous, and right.

Therefore, God has completely measured the price of this rejection and rebellion.

He’s measured the entire length, width, height, and depth of it.

Unfortunately, it is a price deeper than our understanding, and greater than our comprehension.

The cost of this price is death.

An immeasurable, spotless, and blameless death.

This death could only be accomplished by God Himself.

It was accomplished by Son of God, who’s named Jesus, on the cross as He gave His life that whoever would repent of sin and believe in Him would be brought back to God.

And here’s what the death accomplishes…

· Restoration

· Healing

· Life

· Freedom from bondage

Through this set up plan by God Himself, we, are being restored.

But as discussed earlier in the text, there are misunderstandings sometimes.

Sometimes, we completely miss this grand story of restoration through the death of one man.

We “completely miss” this celebration by living in the “old” system of things and not recognizing what God has made new and is making new.
