Sermon: Sermon: Mary the Lord’s Servant  (Luke 1:38)

 

~*the most famous Teenager in the Bible

Mary = Gr /Mariam/; i.e.

Heb Miriam, so throughout Luke

Mary is portrayed as favored of God (v.

30), deeply thoughtful (v.

29; 2:19, 51), obedient (v.

38), believing (v.

45), worshipful (v.

46), and devoted to Jewish law and piety (2:22-51).

It is little wonder that Luke names her in the company of believers when the church began (Acts 1:14).

She was a daughter of the royal family, lineally descended from David, and she herself and all her friends knew it, for she went under the title and character of the /house of David,/ though she was poor and low in the world

 

THE LORD’S SERVANT IS A RECIPIENT OF GOD’S GRACE….and…..responder to God’s grace (Luke 1:26-30)

Lk.1:26

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to *Nazareth*, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be *married* to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.

The virgin’s name was Mary.

The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

To grace, highly honor or greatly favor.

In the NT spoken only of the divine favor, as to the virgin Mary in Luke 1:28, /kecharitōménē/, the perf.

The verb /charitóō/ declares the virgin Mary to be highly favored, approved of God to conceive the Son of God through the Holy Spirit.

The only other use of /charitóō/ is in Eph.

1:6 where believers are said to be “accepted in the beloved,” i.e., objects of grace.

THE LORD’S SERVANT HAS FAITH EVEN WHEN HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND OR KNOW THE DETAILS OF GOD’S PLAN (Luke 1:29-34)

 

Lk.1:29

Mary was greatly *troubled* [/diatarasso, /To stir up throughout, greatly, completely, /Confundir, desconcertar//]/ at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be *afraid [*/phobeo]/, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.

32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.

The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “*How will this be*,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.”
