So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive.
Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.” And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth.

A gap between Chapter six and seven, maybe 120 years? Chapter six God tells Noah to build the ark and this chapter He say to enter the ark.
Verse 1 is an invitation to enter the ark.
Verse 1-4 is the reason for God’s invitation.
Verses 5-9 shows the continued obedience of Noah.

The invitation must have been comforting and terrifying. Delivered from the trials and abuse of unbelieving world, yet facing massive destruction of all he knew.
Delivered
“Come” as a father invites his children to get shelter from an impending storm.
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
Noah’s name means rest. We can find safety and security from the coming judgment by entering into Jesus. Ark = coffin
God gives an invitation to come in
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
An invitation to be filled
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
An invitation to the marriage supper
Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.” ’
And we get to invite people too.
And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
You and your household… was his whole family following God? Probably, God gave the invitation and all responded. They probably wouldn’t have if they hadn’t believed.

The Reason for God’s invitation:

Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.”
1. Noah was righteous, he believed what God said and did what God asked.
just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.
2. He was to save animal life. seven of all clean animals, not an afterthought, now that the time is here, the details are given. Why seven? sacrifice & eating? Clean and unclean? .
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.

3. Judgment is imminent. One final week for man to repent.
By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
People in Noah’s day didn’t think that judgment was coming, people in our day deny that judgment came. Even though there is ample evidence for a world wide flood. This way they can deny that God will bring judgment again even though He said He will.
knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

The continued obedience of Noah.
It hadn’t begun to rain, Noah was acting on faith. All he had was what we have. God’s Word.
The animals came as God called them, (the same one who gave them instinct) Only man has trouble obeying God.
The ox knows its owner And the donkey its master’s crib; But Israel does not know, My people do not consider.”

The Bible is not the only book that reports the flood. It is fascinating to read and hear flood stories from the Eskimos to the Aborigines and in between. There are differences because of the oral traditions but the Genesis account was written down as God dictated it to Moses.
The point of this account is not to just record history but to lead us to think about the final judgment and salvation to come.
And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights. On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark—they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in. Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died.

God’s power of judgment had a specific day. 600th year of Noah on the 17th day of the second month? Right after fall harvests?
Fountains of great deep broken up. Earth’s crust broken up. The firmament collapsing, earth would be completely different than what it was. This was a world wide cataclysm that has never even come close again. Mt. St. Helens, Pom Pei, all the earth quakes and sunamies are not comparable to what happened during the flood. Man and his horrible weapons couldn’t compare to this event.
The number 40 becomes associated with testing and purification, especially before coming into something new and significant. This is seen in Moses’ time on Mount Sinai
So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
“Thus I prostrated myself before the Lord; forty days and forty nights I kept prostrating myself, because the Lord had said He would destroy you.
the spies’ trip to Canaan (),
And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
Israel’s time in the wilderness
And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.
So the Lord’s anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone.
Elijah’s miraculous journey to Sinai
So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.
Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness .
And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.

Salvation in Judgment, 3 times 1-4, 7-9, and again here in 13-17 we are told who enters the Ark stressing the mercy and grace of God even in the midst of judgment.
God shut the door. Noah didn’t shut the door on anyone’s salvation.
“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens”:
1Corinthians 6:2
Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.
The Ark was salvation for all who entered. No second chances for those outside.
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,

This is the fulfilment of Gods Word on judgment.
story of over
young zealous preacher that couldn’t remember his point, yells, “behold I come” three times desperately trying to remember his point and lunges toward the congregation each time. The last time he falls off the podium and crashes into an elderly gentleman on the front row. He apologizes profusely. The elderly gentleman says, “its not your fault, you warned me three times.”
If God says it, it will happen. We just have to wait.
The description of the flood in this passage is so complete and specific that it is impossible to reconcile a local flood with the Biblical record. Despite the claims of some, this was a global deluge.
i. If this were not a global flood, then the ark itself would be unnecessary. If this were only a local flood, then God’s promise to never again bring such a flood is false. If this were only a local flood, the Bible is wrong when it traces all of humanity back to Noah’s sons and other passages that speak of a universal flood (such as
You who laid the foundations of the earth, So that it should not be moved forever, You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters stood above the mountains. At Your rebuke they fled; At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away. They went up over the mountains; They went down into the valleys, To the place which You founded for them. You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, That they may not return to cover the earth.
).
For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.
Boice specifically cites the legends of the Samo-Kubo tribe of New Guinea, the Athapascan Indians of America, the Papago Indians of Arizona, Brazilian tribes, Peruvian Indians, African Hottentots, natives of Greenland, native Hawaiian islanders, Hindus, Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Australian natives, the Welsh, Celts, Druids, Siberians, and Lithuanians.
iv. Of the more than 200 cultures that have their own account of the flood the following aspects of the story are common:
· 88% describe a favored family· 70% attribute survival to a boat· 95% say the sole cause of the catastrophe is a flood· 66% say that the disaster is due to man’s wickedness· 67% record that animals are also saved· 57% describe that the survivors end up on a mountain· Many of the accounts also specifically mention birds being sent out, a rainbow, and eight persons being saved
And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.
This took a lot of water, but there is plenty of water on the earth today to do this – but because of the topography of the earth, the water is collected into oceans. If the earth were a perfect sphere, the oceans would cover the land to a depth of two-and-a-half to three miles. Before the cataclysmic flood, the earth may have been much nearer to a perfect sphere.
c. All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died: In the Scopes Monkey Trial, Clarence Darrow humiliated William Jennings Bryan by asking him if he believed every word in the Bible. When Bryan said he did, Darrow asked him how the fish drowned in the flood. Bryan didn’t know the answer, gave a great, confused speech, and died the next day. If only he would have known the Bible better, he would have known it says this about the breath of the spirit of life. The fish did not die in the flood; only animals with the breathof life in them died, the animals on dry land.
i. God did just as He said. Virtually all of Noah’s contemporaries did not believe God would do just as He said. Though it took 120 years, God demonstrated that He keeps His promises and is totally faithful.
2. () The flood lasted 150 days without receding.
And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.
a. One hundred and fifty days: Some suggest that God put some or many of these animals into a period of hibernation for this period, meaning that less food, space, and “damage control” was be needed.
b. One hundred and fifty days: God provides many animals today with an amazing instinct for hibernation. It would be no difficulty for Him to miraculously impart a unique instinct for these particular animals.
