Why talk about parenting?
Recent events:
School shootings
Church shooting
Suicide here at home.
Parents, it is important that we are teaching our kids about God.
Instructing them about Christ.
Encouraging them to live lives that please and honor God.
Deuteronomy 6:
Options for Parenting
1 Parent centered home
Focused on Parents
2 Child centered home
Focused on Children
Both have negatives
Can produce idolatry that focuses on self.
Remember: An idol is anything or anyone that begins to capture our hearts and minds and affections more than God.
Best Option?
Better option...
God Centered Home
Based on the principle that the purpose of every Christian is to glorify God!
1 Cor
Parents, we model this and then teach kids to do the same.
The God-centered home is one in which everyone is committed to pleasing and serving God.
God’s desires are exalted over everyone else’s.
Teaches children to serve rather than be served, to honor rather than be honored, to give (be loving rather than take and be selfish).

Elements of the God-Centered Home
Focus on Truth
What is truth?
God’s word is the source of truth.
God’s word IS truth!
Jesus said:
You can’t teach your kids biblical principles unless you know the Bible yourself.
Proper Understanding of Worship.
john 17
It is wise to talk to your kids about their heart motivations.
When they make mistakes.
When you discipline.
Proper Understanding of Worship.
We are all worshiping something!
Possibilities include:
Health, material things, physical appearance, an ideal (politics, pro-life, peace), money, fairness, success/position/power, pain-free life, approval of others, worldly pleasures, control, children, spouse, having your needs met, another person, perfect marriage, etc...
Our hearts affections and minds devotions are to be directed towards God.
Parents, what are you modeling for your kids?
I’m never surprised by a parent who wonders why their children turn away from church when they get older when they modeled that for them as they grew up.
If you lack a devotion for God, don’t be surprised when they do too.
Do they see you:
Reading the Bible
Praying
Worshipping God
Making it your goal to please the Lord and serve Him?
Glorifying God
By your thoughts (taking every thought captive to obedience to Christ) and actions (whatever you do… do it for the glory of God.
Are you striving to act like Christ as an example to your kids?
Preach the Gospel
Parents this is your responsibility.
Tell them who Christ is and who you are In Christ.
Memorize
Teach them the importance and power of the Gospel:
Roman
Preach Christ and Him crucified!
This was Paul’s primary focus and should be ours as well.
As parents we need to help our children see that Christ is foundational to life and godliness, to living a life that pleases God.
Teach your children that Jesus died so sinners can be reconciled to God and forgiven for all of their sins.
No Regrets!
The parent who will teach the gospel will never regret having done so… but the one who neglects to do so will regret that decision.
Don’t leave it to someone else to do it.
Don’t leave it to the church.
If you need instruction, come see me.
Find a deacon.
They are never to young to learn and hear the truth of Christ!
Understand Heart Issues
The Bible gives us guidance in knowing the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
It is wise to talk to your kids about their heart motivations.
When they make mistakes.
When you discipline.
