Introduction

One day a Jewish gal named Miriam approached her Rabbi after the service and said to him, "Rabbi, I have a problem.  I have two female talking parrots, but they only say well actually sing one thing."
"What do they sing?" the Rabbi asks.
"They only know how to sing that one song from Fiddler on the Roof, 'Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make me a match, Find me a find, catch me a catch'" It was really cute the first 50 times but now these two birds are driving me crazy.
"Why, that's terrible!" the Rabbi says, "but I have a solution to your problem.  Bring your two female parrots over to my house tomorrow and I will put them with my two male talking parrots that I taught to pray and read Hebrew. My parrots will teach your parrots to praise and worship in Hebrew. It is very beautiful and delightful to hear." "Oh thank you, Rabbi," Miram replied.
The next day Miriam brought her female parrots to the Rabbi's house. His two male parrots are wearing tiny yamulkes and praying in their cage.  Miriam puts her two female parrots in with the male parrots and the female parrots say, "Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make me a match, Find me a find, catch me a catch"
One male parrot looks over at the other male parrot and exclaims, "Put away the siddurs!  Our prayers have been answered!"
I want to talk to you today about El Elyon. El Elyon has the right to overrule.
We are in our brand new series on the Names of God. I believe this series is important for lots of people, for lots of reasons. Did you know that n Muslim theology, you can know 99 of God’s names but God’s highest and truest name is unrevealed. And, some theologians in the Christian tradition have adopted the Muslim view and also said that God is nameless. I suppose these Muslim theologian and Christian theologians believe they are somehow protecting God’s reputation or power or something.
But they do not agree with Scripture, God did not remain nameless. He did not stay hidden in unfathomable mystery, tucked away behind some infinite cloud of unknowing. You need to know and remember these two things:
God chose to reveal himself to us by sharing with us His Name(s).
In giving His Name, he summons us to make use of that Name when calling upon Him.
Psalm 105:1 TLV
Praise Adonai, call upon His Name. Make known His deeds among the peoples.
The name El Elyon, God Most High, is the name to call upon when you need a situation overruled.
On August 5, 2010, 33 Chilean miners were trapped 2300 feet underground in a copper and gold mine just outside of a small town called Copiapó. A cave-in confined the men in a dark place with no way out. They were imprisoned in a seemingly impenetrable fortress of rock.
For more than two weeks, rescuers heard nothing at all from the trapped miners. It’s bad enough to be in a pit, but it’s even worse when you can’t get out and you don’t see anyone who can help you. The men couldn’t help each other out of this pit. They were stuck together, sitting, sleeping, hungry, cold… and sometimes without hope. They were helpless and desperate. If they were going to be saved, help would have to come from above.
Finally, after 17 days, rescuers found a note taped to one of their drill bits— the miners were alive. The rescuers drilled a larger hole down through the earth, inserted a small tube, and provided the miners with food, water, light, medicine, and communication equipment. The hole did not deliver them, but it gave them hope.
Perhaps today you find yourself in a similar circumstance. Life has caved in on you spiritually, financially, relationally, or emotionally. You see no way out. Like the trapped miners, you aren’t even sure anyone up above even knows where you are.
These miners knew there help would have to come from above. Not from earth moving equipment, not from drills, not from men but from High Above, from God Most High. These miners appealed to His name and the character attached to it and you know the rest of the story.
The miners were finally freed when a two-foot-wide capsule called the Phoenix lifted them one by one from their prison. All 33 were saved. After they had been set free, one of the trapped miners said they had gathered as a group in the pit and called on God Most High to rescue them. They appealed to His name and the character attached to it.
The name El Elyon, God Most High, is the name to call upon when you need a situation overruled.
The Background
Abram’s Enemies were Great Men. Some might have called them Elyon, Highly Exalted Ones.
The Four Kings defeat the Five Kings of Southern Israel.
Sodom’s King is one of those Kings.
Lot was a resident of Sodom at this time.
Lot is taken Prisoner by Chedorlaomer and the other kings.
Genesis 14:14–16 TLV
When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he rallied his trained men, those born in his household, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. Then he divided his servants against them at night, and he defeated them and pursued them as far as Hovah, which is north of Damascus. He brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot and his possessions, as well as the women and the other people.
The Unbelievable Victory
El Elyon overruled the mighty kings of men for Abram.
Abram’s militia defeats a massive coalition-army.
Abram’s militia takes the prisoners and plunder of war.
Abram did not have faith credited to him or circumcision.
Abram just had confidence in God Most High.
Genesis 14:17–18 TLV
Now after he returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (this is the King’s Valley). Then Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine—he was a priest of El Elyon.
Genesis 14:19–20 TLV
He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by El Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth, and blessed be El Elyon, Who gave over your enemies Into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Genesis 14:21 TLV
Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people—the possessions take for yourself.”
This is exactly what Satan often tries to get us to do. He is a defeated foe. He seeks to cut a deal with you just as the king of Sodom sought to cut a deal with Abram. In this deal, he entices you with a piece of God’s glory. God’s victories turn into joint ventures— partnerships in which you can share the credit. So adamant was Abram against the king of Sodom stealing any of God’s glory, he told him that he wouldn’t even take “a thread or a sandal thong” just so the king couldn’t claim that he had contributed to Abram’s success. El Elyon had won the battle, and El Elyon would receive the praise due Him.
Genesis 14:22–23 TLV
But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I raise my hand in oath to Adonai, El Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth. Not a thread or even a sandal strap of all that is yours will I take, so you will not say, ‘I’ve made Abram rich!’
Genesis 14:24 TLV
I claim nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me—Aner, Eschol, and Mamre—let them take their share.”
El Elyon was Abram’s Source everything else was just a resource.
Unlike the king of Sodom, the king of Salem understood who had won the battle for Abram. As we saw earlier in his blessing to Abram, he made that point perfectly clear. We read, “And blessed be God Most High [El Elyon], who has delivered your enemies into your hand” (Genesis 14: 20).
Melchizedek was more than a king. He was also a priest. A priest’s job is to stand between God and the people and be the point of communication from God to the people and from the people back to God again. The priest is the in-between person, or mediator.
As both priest and king, Melchizedek made it clear that the 318 trained men who traveled more than 240 miles weren’t the ones who turned defeat into victory. They were not the source of deliverance at all. However, they were the resource of deliverance. The difference between the two is enormous, yet few believers truly grasp this truth and live it out on a daily basis.
This spiritual principle of the Source versus the resource came to me one night after a prayer meeting when I was 21 years old. It was just a couple of months before I met my bride Lauren. I was serving with a group of radical young adults that called ourselves Generation Jesus/Yeshua.
I was on my way home when I saw a party. I drove past it and all these kids were outside. A lot of gang bangers. I even recognized a couple from my old life. I felt the Spirit prompt me to pull over and go share Messiah. I did not hesitate. I pulled over and got out of my truck. Walked over to a guy I knew was running the party. They recognized me, well I mean they recognized me as the new Michael. The Michael that got born again. They were scoffing at me. Making fun. They started to circle around me. There was this one guy, Franky. I saw take a position off my right side. I had seen this before. He was about to lay me out with one punch.
I started talking to them about the Messiah. Everything changed. They started listening to me. They stopped scoffing and mocking me. I even prayed with them and they bowed their heads. It was awesome. I went home praising God and shared this testimony with all my friends at Generation Jesus/Yeshua.
What was funny. I saw that guy Franky just a couple weeks later at the mall in First Colony. I went up to him and he acted all nervous. I asked how he was and I said to him, “Hey what happened that night at that party I showed up at and shared the Gospel?” I said, “I saw you standing there ready to swing on me and take me out, what happened?” He said to me, “Michael, we were all going to jump you and put you in the hospital.” But, “When you started talking about that Yeshua person, I looked over to your truck and I saw that you had brought five or six big guys with you and they were walking over to you. So I did not want to mess with them.” I said, “What are you talking about. I was alone. There was no one with me.”
He said, “Michael, you got to be lying. I saw them with my eyes. Big dudes.” When you left we all saw them walking behind your truck as you left to your mom’s house.”
I said, “Franky, there was no one with me. I don’t know what you think you saw but I can tell you what you did see. My God sent his protecting army, his angels to guard me. He will do the same for you if you will call on His son’s name.”
The kings who were causing Abram and his relatives trouble were kings of earth. His problem was an earthly situation. Yet El Elyon owns both heaven and earth. That’s why 318 trained men can look like 30,000 trained men in a battle against four kings and their armies. That is why I could boldly go and preach where I should not have even been. Because when youare accompanied by El Elyon he overrules the might and the powerful.
The Name El Elyon teaches us simply this one principle:
You only have One Source.
And one of the worst things you or I could ever do is to treat a resource as if it were our Source. God is the owner, the Most High over all, so He is the possessor of everything on heaven and earth. He is the Source.
Whatever you make your Source is your El Elyon. It is your idol.
Even your job isn’t your source. Nor is your boss. If you get a pink slip, if things don’t work out as you had planned, if you don’t get the promotion you thought was yours… God has a myriad of ways to provide for you, open doors for you, and lead you on His path for you. When you understand He is your Source, you don’t need to fear what mankind can say because mankind doesn’t have the final say.
I heard Elisabeth Elliot say it this way:
“Do you serve a god of your own making or do you serve God Most High?”
El Elyon is your Source.
If you are facing financial difficulties money is not your SOURCE, El Elyon is your Source.
If you are facing health difficulties the doctor’s report is not your SOURCE, El Elyon is your Source.
If you are facing difficulties from a divorce, a new spouse is not your SOURCE, El Elyon is your Source.
If you feel like you are facing an overwhelming battle because you are from or living in a broken home, don’t give up, El Elyon is your Source!
If you have been overcome by some terrible habit, some besetting sin, don’t give up, El Elyon is your Source! If you are facing relationship problems, financial trouble, and you are tempted to live below God’s plan for prosperity in your life, don’t give up, El Elyon is your Source!
Isaiah 14:11–14 TLV
Your pomp is brought down to Sheol with the music of your harps. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you.” How you have fallen from heaven, O brighstar, son of the dawn! How you are cut down to the earth, you who made the nations prostrate! You said in your heart: “I will ascend to heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit upon the mount of meeting, in the uttermost parts of the north. I will ascend above the high places of the clouds— I will make myself like Elyon.”
When you make El Elyon your Source expect Satan to attack. Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to go wrong? I have had days when it seemed as though there was an invisible wall of pressure against me. I have said to my wife, Lauren, “Something is going on here. Everything seems to be a flop and go wrong. The Enemy is here” When this happens, I have learned to call a halt to whatever is going on and start to worship God and declare to the Devil, “Not Today!”
When you are close to El Elyon it angers Satan because there is room for him to insert anything between you and El Elyon, your Heavenly Father.
Trust me He can see it when you are making El Elyon your Source.
Do you remember in Luke 8. Yeshua travels to the Gerasenes and met A demon-plagued man from the town. The man hadn’t worn any clothing for a long time and was living not in a house but in the tombs. Immediately, when the demon saw Yeshua do you remember what He said?
Luke 8:28 TLV
Seeing Yeshua, he cried out and fell down before Yeshua, and with a loud voice said, “What’s between You and me, Yeshua, Ben El Elyon? I’m begging You, do not torment me!”
The enemy could see that Yeshua was connected to the Source. He was not relying on resources but on the Source: El Elyon.
Some of you might think, “Yeah, but that was Yeshua. I am not the Son of God!” Granted but
Acts 16:17 TLV
Following after Paul and us, she kept shouting, saying, “These men are servants of El Elyon, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.”
Every time you make El Elyon your Source, you pose the greatest threat to the enemy because you are going to start finally walking in real victory. You will become just like Abram. You will go out to battle against an enemy stronger than you and mightier than you but you will come back victorious because El Elyon is on your side.
To be a Ben Elyon to be recognized as a servant of Elyon, you must face your personal strongholds, ideological strongholds and spiritual strongholds the way Yeshua did and Rabbi Paul by making El Elyon your Source.
Here is where so many believers fail. They do not make El Elyon their source and they still are relying on their resources.
Let me give you an example.
Time for the Door Example and Psalm 91.
Here is what you do to let go and let El Elyon be your Source
You are to resist the devil by submitting to El Elyon.
James 4: 6– 7 tells us: “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” You submit yourself to God. You resist the devil, and he will flee from you. That word flee means “to run as if in terror.”
How do You Submit? The same way Yeshua did.
Submit to El Elyon as Your Source by agreeing with His Word and Will!
I told you this year I believe the Lord wants you to have confidence in God, to believe that God can do what only God can do. Even though you may have been tormented, defeated, and cast down, failed, had promises delayed, perhaps you are held captive by a thought, and that thought brings fear. Here are some of the thoughts Satan drops into our minds:
“You are no good.”
“You are a sex addict.”
“You are not saved.”
“You are not going to make it into heaven.”
“Your children are going to hell.”
“You are going to have an accident.”
“You can’t be free of alcohol.”
“No one appreciates you.”
“Your spouse doesn’t love you anymore.”
“You have cancer.”
“You have a tumor in the brain.”
“You will never get well.”
“You would be better off dead.”
“It’s just as bad to think a thing as do it, so go ahead and do it.”
The thoughts go on and on. The devil introduces thousands of lies to your mind. When you accept them as your own thoughts, you begin to say with your mouth what Satan has said to your mind.
I hear people doing this all the time. They hear the thought, it brings fear, and then they begin to say what Satan has planted in their mind. They speak the thoughts:
“I am no good.”
“I am abnormal.”
“I am not saved.”
“I’ll never make it to heaven.”
“I am lost!”
“My children will never get saved.”
“I am going to have a wreck.”
“No one appreciates me.”
“My spouse doesn’t love me anymore.”
Remember, the devil is a liar and the father of all lies (John 8: 44). He cannot tell the truth. If you will take just the opposite of what the devil has told you, you will know the truth! You have to declare the truth of God’s Word and Will over your life, your spouse, your children, your job, your relationships, your dreams.
Submit to El Elyon as Your Source by agreeing with His Word and Will!
Submit to El Elyon as Your Source by praising the Name El Elyon. Declaring to your personal strongholds, and your spiritual strongholds, “Not Today, Not Today!”
Not Today by Hillsong
When you start to make El Elyon your Source everything changes. Strongholds of sin come tumbling down. Strongholds of unbelief go away. Financial strongholds disappear. Relational Strongholds. Marital Strongholds. All the sudden that feeling like something is working against you is going to start feeling like El Elyon is working for you!
I remember a billboard that asked the question, “Who’s your Daddy?” It was an advertisement for DNA testing. They can take a child’s DNA and test another person’s DNA and see if it matches. A match proves the two people are scientifically related. Out of the billions of people on Earth, the chances of your DNA matching someone who’s not your family is so small that it’s inconceivable.
In a similar way, when you give your life to Messiah, the Scripture talks about how you became a new creation. You were born into a new family. You entered into a new family.
Now imagine that somehow we could do spiritual DNA testing. They take a sample of DNA from your Heavenly Father, El Elyon, then a sample of DNA from you, and run all the tests. The good news is that it would come back a perfect match. It would prove beyond all doubt that you are God’s child. You have His DNA. You come from a royal bloodline.
1 John 4:4 TLV
You are from God, children, and you have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
Given your DNA, don’t you dare go around thinking that you’re average. You are not average, you are a daughter, a son of the Most High, El Elyon. Don’t walk around saying I can’t beat this debt problem, I can’t win in my marriage, there is no chance of ever getting my kids out of darkness, I could never accomplish my dreams. Are you kidding? Do you know who your Father is, He is El Elyon? You have His DNA. He created worlds.
El Elyon overrules your greatest adversary.
There’s nothing too much for you. You can overcome that sickness. You can run that company. You can build and support that orphanage. You can take your family to a new level. Quit believing the lies that say, “You’ve reached your limits. You’ve gone as far as you can go.” Start talking to yourself like Abram, like Yeshua, like Rabbi, you are a daughter a son of El Elyon.
It’s in your spiritual DNA. You’re expected to walk in victory. You’re expected to walk in blessing. You are expected to be the head and not the tail. You are expected to be the leader and not the led. You are expected to lend out to many but borrow from none.
If you were a football fan in the 1970s and 80s then you know one of the great quarterbacks was Archie Manning. He genetically set His sons up for success.
You might think it is no big deal to see Archie Manning’s sons play professional football. Since, Archie was an NFL Pro Bowl quarterback. But Eli Manning and Payton Manning were not going to become professional quarterbacks by sitting on the couch and drinking beer and eating chips. They learned everything they could from their Father. The trained and they disciplined themselves to go further than their Father.
In the same way, you have got the spiritual DNA of El Elyon in you but now you have got to train yourself to make Him your Source. You have to train yourself to let go of that doorknob and let El Elyon guard over your life. To bless you and provide an amazing victory for you.
I opened this message talking about the 33 Chilean miners who had been trapped 2300 feet beneath the ground. They had found themselves in a hopeless situation in which their circumstances and the rocks caving in around them seemed to dictate the outcome. Yet when help came from above, each of these men was lifted to safety through a metal transport system called the Phoenix.
The Phoenix was named after a mythical birdlike creature that was said to have died and then been resurrected out of its own ashes. Lifting the miners out of the belly of the earth is about as close to a resurrection as humanity can muster.
Yet 2000 years ago a true resurrection occurred out of the silent rocks that held a lifeless body in a cold cave. He had died after only 33 years on earth, crucified on a cross for a crime He didn’t commit. But death couldn’t keep Him in the ground. El Elyon Himself raised Yeshua up in order to give each of us an opportunity to receive eternal life. Because of His resurrection out of a hopeless situation, we now have hope. We have been brought into the family of the Father, we are sons and daughters of El Elyon.
I want to give you the opportunity to respond today.
