Amos
God is merciful to His people by giving them His word.
The people of God live by the word of God.

The People of God Need the Word of God.
God is judging His people by withholding His word.
The church today is anemic spiritually for many reasons, but one of the major reasons has to be the loss of biblical content in so much of contemporary preaching.
Pop-psychology sometimes substitutes for the Word of God.
Feel-good messages on “Five Ways to Be Happy” and “Three Ways to Love Your Mother” have become the steady cotton candy diet fed to the average church.

A Special Call

Once again the writer seems to be selecting physical details with striking significance.
“The lamp of God had not yet gone out.”
On the one hand, this was the lamp that burned “from evening to morning” in the tabernacle (, ; ).
If it “had not yet gone out,” it was still nighttime.
On the other hand, in the darkness represented by God’s silence and Eli’s blindness, the news that God’s lamp “had not yet gone out” suggests that God had not yet abandoned his people.
There was still hope.
This is the essence of this text - God calls Samuel (v. 4, v. 6, v. 8)
There was confusion because God’s voice was unfamiliar.

1 Sam 3
1 Sam 3:6-7
Samuel did not yet know Yahweh This verse explains how Samuel could initially fail to recognize Yahweh’s voice: He was not yet a prophet.
Although Samuel knew of Yahweh and served Him daily, he had not yet been called to his prophetic office.
There was clarification because Samuel had a mentor.

A foundational truth of the Christian faith is that when God speaks we must listen.
One of the most abused phrases in Christianity is “God spoke to me”.
If there is not a chapter and verse reference with that word from the Lord be careful attributing it to Him.
How do I hear the voice of God?

A Serious Conversation

1 Sam
The word of the Lord is true and good but not always pleasant.
Don’t be surprised when the word of God makes you uncomfortable.
Be suspicious when someone claims to speak the Word but that word never causes anyone to cringe.
Because of the nature of the Word we must resist the urge to conceal truth that is uncomfortable.
1 Sam 3:15-17
Submission is the proper response to the word.
God blesses His people by giving them His Word.
Application
In light of the nature of the Bible will you minimize mysticism and hear God’s voice in the text of the Scriptures?
In light of the fact that God’s Word is His good gift to you are you listening?
In light of the abrasiveness of the Word will you submit yourself fully to His authority?
