Biblical Communications &
Preaching MN 5115
Sermon three
ESV (part one)
Attention: During my stent in the Army I recieved tons of orders.
My first set took me to fort Knox KY Basic training where I learned my general orders.
Colorado springs, Co as a CAV scout
Schweinfurt GE as a CAV Scout
operational orders,
promotional orders,
Request for orders,
Fragmentary orders.
Deployment orders
There was a couple general base orders that superseded them all.
The orders to lawfully obey the officers appointed above me and to support and defend the Constitution of the US.
Open your Bibles to Jonah Chapter 3 were going to be reading verses 1-3 this afternoon.
Open your Bibles to Jonah Chapter 3 were going to be reading verses 1-3 this afternoon.
PNP: In this passage, this afternoon, we observe there are 2 attributes to the word of God.
Secure Interest:
What does it mean to be called?
Does a person work to figure out what there to do?
Or is more like the official military orders I just read.
By definition a calling is God’s summoning of His people to himself or accomplishing a particular task.
In a sermon on effectual calling The late Charles Spurgeon preached.
There is a general call which many men, yea, all men reject, “unless”...... further quoting, there come after it the personal, particular call, which makes us Christians.
You will bear me witness that it was a personal call that brought you to the Saviour.
It was some sermon which led you to feel that you were, no doubt, the person intended.[1]
In a larger sense we have already discussed God’s calling to himself through the first 2 chapters of this book.
The calling we will be discussing this afternoon is a specific calling to obedience.
Crucial assertion:
I’ve often heard individuals ask me whats your calling?
I’ve even heard others state here in seminary that there here to receive theirs.
Others wander from house, to job, to Church, trying to figure out what their calling specifically is.
Allow me this afternoon to remind you of your very first set of orders, or calling.
Today we will see this calling originates in one authorative truth.
Love/ Loathe:
Lets looks to a biblical example to demonstrate what I’m talking about.
Two side by side callings we can compare and contrast that produce differing effects.
I’m talking about the two builders Jesus describes in .
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Projection of a determinative difference:

Projection of a determinative difference:
We can see definitively our orders/ calling matter because they produce differing effects.
This weeks sermon will not discuss the effects of a calling per-say due to time constraints.
Rather, we will discuss attributes a calling exhibits so that you can experience the effects you truly desire to attain.
Purpose:
Let me be clear then this afternoon, my purpose in writing this sermon is for you to source your calling and fulfill it.
Orientation
We pick up in part one of a two-part sermon within section 3 of the book of Jonah, regarding Jonah’s obedience.
Summarization of context.
We discussed last time I preached that Israel, was a divided nation, with Assyrian barbarians to their north.
And that Nineveh was the capital city of these blood thirsty barbarians.
We also discussed the broad narrative storyline to this point about how in , Jonah disobeyed God’s word, telling him to go to Nineveh and preach, instead heads the opposite direction of Nineveh.
We recall God sent a mighty storm that began to disembowel the ship.
Causing fear and confrontation with Jonah.
Jonah then confesses his sin of fleeing from Gods presence and convinces the crew to cast him into the sea.
In we read how God provided a fish that swallowed Jonah.
Connection to last message
In my last message, we observed that taught us catastrophes produce 3 God glorifying gifts in the lives of men.
Namely in chapter 2:7 Catastrophes produce the glorifying gift of a refined testimony, and how there there was an admission of who we once were.
In verse 8 we learned Catastrophes produce the glorifying gift of a refined purpose toward the saved and unsaved.
Lastly we learned in verse 9-10 that Catastrophes produce a glorifying gift of refined identities, consisting of worship and pride refinements in verse 9 and co-dependency and glory refinements in verse 10.
Now we pick up this afternoon in Jonah chapter 3: verse 1-3.
Restate PNP: In this passage, this afternoon, we observe there are 2 attributes to the Word of the Living God that will effect our calling.
The first element we observe this morning is that
I.
The attribute that the Word of the Lord is Living.
()
Lets read Jonah Chapter 3:1.
There are two things we can observe about its living attribute in this passage.
We can observe 2 things regarding features of effectual calling in verse 3:1, first is
A. First Its living because it’s personal: () This "Word of the Lord Came saying to Jonah” First we need to note is that the word of the Lord comes to and is for fallen people, Jonah just blew it.
In chapter one we read how Jonah disobeyed and received a divine whoopin.
Jonah is in no position to be receiving anything further from a Holy and righteously good God.
God’s Word didn't need to go anywhere, he chose to pursue Jonah in spite of his sinfulness.
Interesting to note here is the entirety of verse 1 is almost perfectly identical to .
approximately 175 years earlier.
In Jeremiah’s passage He witnessed a boiling pot informing Jeremiah that Judah was about to get balled up by the Babylonian empire to their north.
175 years later we see the exact same message only this time its a message to go proclaim a message to a different army the assyrians.
B. It’s specific to a prepared person: ()
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
When I was in Iraq sitting in the outskirts of Bagdad I was eagerly waiting on official Orders to be published.
I knew they would come because we received what is known as a warning order.
A WARNO is an order that tells us to get ready official orders are about to come.
I could’t move into the next phase of operation without official orders.
Finally after seemingly months of waiting they came.
They were my ticket home.
How many are waiting, longing, looking, and anticipating this afternoon for their “Coming order” Are you waiting well?
During a warning order we were to prepare for the future but execute the last order.
The second thing we observe

B. It’s received not sought after: ()
B. It’s received not sought after: ()
B. Second Its living because it’s personal “to Jonah”: () Which brings us to the third thing we can observe about the words living attribute.
