We need a great defense and our defense is found in Christ Alone.

One is the almost urban-mythical story of how these elite leaders turned down Southern Airline’s offer to make Birmingham its southeastern hub in the 1940s.

According to the story, the city’s small-thinking leaders believed Birmingham’s airport was big enough for the needs then.

But they really feared the international flights could bring in too many folks unwilling to accept the “Southern way of life,” the story goes.

The airline company went instead to Atlanta, became part of Delta Airlines, and the rest is history.

An inventor named Alexander Graham Bell made an appointment with Western Union to sell them on the idea of something called a telephone.

Western Union’s president gave his answer: “What use could this company make of an electrical toy?”

3. A Michigan banker advised Henry Ford’s lawyer not to invest in the new motor car company, assuring him, “The horse is here to stay, but the automobile is only a novelty.”

4. A inventor named Chester Carlson came up with a new machine that was able to make copies of documents.

He approached IBM, but they told him they weren’t interested.

Kodak told him the same.

Finally, Carlson approached a small company called the Haloid Corporation, which took the idea and renamed itself Xerox.

I have personally made mistake, and you have too.

Our mistake is called sin and it cost us everything, but we have someone who stands in our defense

2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.

But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

Jesus not only is our defense attorney but he does something unique in that role.

He acknowledges our guilt.

My purpose in writing what I have just written is not that you should abuse them as giving a license to sin but, on the contrary, “in order that ye may not sin at all” (the Greek aorist, implying the absence not only of the habit, but of single acts of sin [Alford]).

In order to “walk in the light” (, ), the first step is confession of sin (),

the next () is that we should forsake all sin.

The divine purpose has for its aim, either to prevent the commission of, or to destroy sin [Bengel].[1]

When all is said and done and we stand before the Savior trying to prepare our defense

What will we say?

You see we will stand guilty

righteous—As our “advocate,” Christ is not a mere suppliant petitioner.

He pleads for us on the ground of justice, or righteousness, as well as mercy.

Though He can say nothing good of us, He can say much for us.

It is His righteousness, or obedience to the law, and endurance of its full penalty for us, on which He grounds His claim for our acquittal[2]

Not only is Jesus our defense attorney but he is the sacrifice (propitaiton)

2. Ready to deliver us.

Propitiation- They had no doubt that sin inevitably arouses the strongest reaction from God. God is not to be accused of moral flabbiness.

He is vigorously opposed to evil in every shape and form while he may be ‘slow to anger’ (, etc.), his anger is yet certain in the face of sin.

We may even read ‘The Lord is slow to

Mercy Seat of God on the Ark - Commandments Broken in the box and above was where God met with them.

It was the mercy seat where blood was sprinkled, but God made the ultimate sacrifice there.

26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.[3]

The Heavenly Sanctuary

11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Even in a passage dealing with the longsuffering of God his refusal to condone guilt finds mention.

The thought that God is slow to anger is to men of the OT far from being a truism.

It is something wonderful and surpassing.

It is awe-inspiring and totally unexpected.[7]

You see what an amazing thing God did

For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;

12 If we endure, we will also reign with Him;

If we deny Him, He also will deny us;

13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

3. Able to redeem us.

Every sin ever committed by every person who p 48 has ever lived will be punished in one of two ways.

Either God’s wrath will be satisfied when all unrepentant and unbelieving sinners suffer eternally in hell (Matt.

13:42; 25:41, 46; 2 Thess.

1:9; Rev. 20:15), or for all who, by the convicting and regenerating power of the Spirit, repent and believe savingly in Jesus, God’s wrath is satisfied by the punishment of Christ Himself on the cross (John 3:14–18).

Divine punishment rendered forgiveness according to God’s sovereign love and grace (cf.

Rom.

3:24–26).

not for ours only but also for the whole world

You see its not limited to just a few but all who come to a realization that they are sinners and fall before the Mercy of God and say:

Realizing we are sinners and need him…
