The Fellowship of the Forgiven.
What does it mean for us who are forgiven to walk in fellowship with the one who forgave?
We continue to desire to move on to maturity. We want to be a people at Bridge of Faith who begin to pursue the will of God in our lives. We want to be a people that daily ask God what is your will and what do you desire.
As we seek to discover the will of God for our lives, we then want to change the way we live our lives to fit his will in our lives.
If you came to Christ and you say nothing changed in my life, then I am not sure you really encountered Christ.
If you have been the master of your life until you encountered Jesus and then encounter Jesus and get a new master, then everything in your life begins to change.
Anyone ever had a roommate? I have had several roommates in my lifetime. My current roommate is by far the best roommate I have ever had! My brother was my roommate growing up. I will never forget one night when my appendix was about to burst and my brother who is 4 years older than me ran and got the vaporizor and said just breathe this. I was leaned over and enhaling that thing for all it was worth. That didn’t work and ended up getting my appendix removed.
My brother and I grew up adjusting to each other as we were roommates.
Then I went to college and everything I was accustomed to in a roommate changed. I got a baseball roommate that loved chat rooms and so we had to adjust to that. I had other roommates that liked to party on the weekend and I have woke up to hangover people in my restroom and chewed them out and kicked them out.
My last roommate before Amy was a dairy farmer and so we had to make adjustments.
I then met my current roommate and we got married and then moved in together. Notice the order of events we got married first then moved in together. That was extra. We had to learn each other. I had a terrible habit of telling her. My mom would do it like this. Here is how my mom did it. My mom would buy this. I remember one day she looked at me and said I am not your mother and if you want to go live with her then that’s fine. You know what happened? I changed.
In a very small sense, When Jesus becomes the Lord of your life it is like getting accustomed to a new roommate. You have to make changes. The difference is that when you encounter Jesus everything changes. Relationships change, behaviors change, responses change. Everything changes when Jesus is the master of your life.
Jesus has forgiven you of sin. Now, our desire as the forgiven to fellowship with the one who has forgiven.
1 John 2:15-
1 John 2:15–27 HCSB
Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For everything that belongs to the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle—is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God’s will remains forever. Children, it is the last hour. And as you have heard, “Antichrist is coming,” even now many antichrists have come. We know from this that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you have knowledge. I have not written to you because you don’t know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie comes from the truth. Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Messiah? This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son can have the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father as well. What you have heard from the beginning must remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life. I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, His anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as He has taught you, remain in Him.
Christian people have entered into a great inheritance in the forgiveness of sins, fellowship with God and the conquest of the evil one, but their temptations have not come to an end.
Stott, J. R. W. (1988). The Letters of John: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 19, p. 102). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.
This morning you may look across the room and wonder why the person the isle over from you is able to have victory over their sin unlike you did this week, then know this that until Jesus returns or calls us home temptations have not come to an end.
World: the life of human society as organized under the power of evil
the life of human society as organized under the power of evil
Stott, J. R. W. (1988). The Letters of John: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 19, p. 102). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.
To walk in fellowship with God he gives us this do not and in this do not he says do not love the World. He is not talking about the things that God had created for his Glory and purposes. Here he is talking about the life of human society that is organized under the power of evil. This idea that you were made for you, bring pleasure to yourself, be smarter than everyone, have more success, it’s all about you so go enjoy.
He says do not love the world or the things that belong to the world.
It is not possible to love the world and love God.
If you love the world then the love for the Father does not exist.
Matthew 6:24 HCSB
“No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money.
Matthew 6:24
I think of a child who’s parents are not on the same page when it comes to raising the children. The child seeks to please one parent but not the other. Side note if this is your parenting then you are not really parenting because you are not on the same page. The child tries to please one parent but the other one is upset.
If you love the World then the Love of the father is not in you.
He gives some explanation about that World he says everything that belongs to the world.
The lust of the flesh:
I can have what I want when I want it, the way I want it. I can indulge my flesh in what I want for my own pleasure and if it benefits me then it is right.
There are times I come to a stop sign and I stop or a yield sign and I yield when I am driving and I think to myself I wonder if that person is thankful that I actually yielded to them like I was supposed to. lol
Nonsense, the law says I yield and I should not get rewarded for doing the thing that is right to do but the lust of the flesh is that everyone owes me and I am right about everything and the world moves and revolves about my likes and dislikes. These things we as Christ followers are not to love.
The lust of his eyes:
The things we see with our eyes. This can be but not limited too possessions, objects, food, and other people. These temptations seem to be things that are on the outside.
I love this
It will include ‘the love of beauty divorced from the love of goodness’ (Law)
Stott, J. R. W. (1988). The Letters of John: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 19, p. 104). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.
This sums up the lust of the eyes. The love of beauty divorced from the love of goodness.
When you lust you are not thinking about goodness all you are thinking about is beauty.
The pride in one’s lifestyle:
This is the boasting of what one has, what one has done and what one is.
I am convinced the older you get the more difficult this becomes. I have lived and I know what I have, what I have done and who I am.
Everyone around me does not have a clue but you can tell that I have it all figured out. I know what is best and no one is going to tell me how to live.
This type of life is not from the Father but is from the World. It is not of God.
Again this calls for a change and a reodering of life
1 John 2:17 HCSB
And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God’s will remains forever.
The world with its lust is passing away.
Look around and see that this is fading and is doomed for destruction. Those who live this way will fade just like the world as well.
The person who will remain is
The one who does God’s will.
Those who do the will of God are eternal.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The Love God Hates (1 John 2:12–17)

John is contrasting two ways of life: a life lived for eternity and a life lived for time. A worldly person lives for the pleasures of the flesh, but a dedicated Christian lives for the joys of the Spirit. A worldly believer lives for what he can see, the lust of the eyes; but a spiritual believer lives for the unseen realities of God (2 Cor. 4:8–18). A worldly minded person lives for the pride of life, the vainglory that appeals to men; but a Christian who does the will of God lives for God’s approval. And he “abideth forever.”

The older my kids get the more they can tell when I am upset. The learn my face expressions and my eye looks and they know when I am not pleased. They can also tell when i am about to laugh or smile at what they are doing.
In the same sense a young Christian has a hard time discovering the will of God. They will ask others what does God want for me and what is his desire. The mature Christian does not need to ask but begins to discover and understand what is the will of God for their life.
The question then becomes not is the right or is this wrong but is this the will of God for my life?
1 John 2:18 HCSB
Children, it is the last hour. And as you have heard, “Antichrist is coming,” even now many antichrists have come. We know from this that it is the last hour.
1 John 2:
Two things here when he writes and says the last hour one we know that God’s time is not our time. The second is that we know the last hour is coming and so he writes about this time and what are our beliefs when this time comes.
Antichrist is coming. He says many antichrists are forerunners of the one still to come.
The Letters of John: An Introduction and Commentary 1. The Heretics and the Genuine Christians (2:18–21)

Certainly the antichrist’s teaching is here recognized as being fundamentally against Christ and a denial of Christ

You can see this as you read the passage that he is referring to those who are against Christ. They went out from us.
I do find it interesting that they were once a part of them but eventually they went out from them.
If they were a part of us then they would have remained.
They left and it made it clear that the never belonged to us.
Just because someone worships with you at church does not mean that they know Jesus. I am sure these people who were in the spirit of the antichrist were once with them but then they went out. In the same since some may worship here but not truly know Jesus.
You know Jesus then you have an anointing from the Holy One and as a result of this anointing you have knowledge.
Sin ever make you feel disgusting? You have the Holy Spirit that reveals sin to you now. You have a knowledge that you never had before.
If you know Jesus you have the Holy Spirit.
Love this promise. This does not say that once you reach the proper level of Christianity you get the anointing but he says you have the anointing of the Holy One and each of you who know Jesus have the Holy One. You are never alone and he is here.
verse 22
He goes back to the Incarnation of Jesus Christ and that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus was fully God in the Flesh and declares that Jesus is the Messiah.
23
You must love the son and the father. I love God but I am unsure about Jesus. The son and the father go together and you can’t have one with out the other.
verse 24
What you have heard from the beginning is the Gospel.
1 Corinthians 15:4 HCSB
that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:3–5 HCSB
For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 HCSB
For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:
This message has not changed and will not change that this message of the Gospel will remain in them.
Remain in him and don’t be distracted by anything that is not of his word.
remain is fellowship
