Intro

We have a bit of a busy service today and I will try to get through everything. Here is how we will roll, we are going to look a few passages, check out a couple of definitions, try to draw some conclusions, then we are going to dismiss early for those that want to leave the service early, there will be no shame in this.
Sometimes, we need to be ready to hear what we need to hear, and we are not always ready or mature enough to hear what we need to hear. I am not saying that any of you are immature, I’m actually the last person that should be talking or pointing fingers about maturity. I brought my daughter today just to keep myself honest.
We’re going to watch couple of videos, well we already watched one, but we have another at the end if I can keep my words down.

Pray

Invite the Holy Spirit
Ask for soft hearts
Ask for clarity
Ask for ears to hear
Get permission to step on toes today
James 1:22 ESV
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
A little history on the journey I have been on

Law (24x’s)
Commandment (25x’s)
Jesus fulfillment of the Law
Matthew 5:17–20 ESV
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:17 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
This got me to thinking, the Psalmist continually declares his love or delight for the Law or Commandments of God
First, I prayed for this desire for myself. I want to desire scripture. I want to know God, I don’t want to be satisfied with just reading. I want to be completely sold out for God in everything.
Jesus states that He is the fulfillment of the Law
Maybe, I should figure out what the Law is, so this sent me to the Book of Leviticus.
Now, I am not all the way through, but I have found some serious gems in this book. I love it.
Some examples:
Herding Nomadic Community
Wealth was determined by how big your flock was
Sheep herders
Sacrificed the finest of their flock
Jesus set this nation financially free with His sacrifice, and it was rejected
Priests were the nobility
Whatever was sacrificed, they got to eat the leftovers
In a community where eating meat was pretty rare except during the festivals
The priests ate meat every day!
Chapter 8 - The Consecration of Aaron & his sons
Leviticus 8:31–36 ESV
31 And Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and there eat it and the bread that is in the basket of ordination offerings, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ 32 And what remains of the flesh and the bread you shall burn up with fire. 33 And you shall not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for it will take seven days to ordain you. 34 As has been done today, the Lord has commanded to be done to make atonement for you. 35 At the entrance of the tent of meeting you shall remain day and night for seven days, performing what the Lord has charged, so that you do not die, for so I have been commanded.” 36 And Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord commanded by Moses.
Lev. 8:31-36
Ordination:
4854 מִלֻּאִים (mil·lǔ·ʾîm): n.masc.; ≡ Str 4394; TWOT 1195e—1. LN 53.16–53.27 priestly ordination offering, i.e., a gift offering as an integral part of the priest’s ordination ceremony (, , , , ; ; , , , , +), note: in context either animal or grain sacrifice;
Ordain:
Ordain:
or•dain \ȯr-ˈdān\ verb
[Middle English ordeinen, from Anglo-French ordener, ordeiner, from Late Latin ordinare, from Latin, to put in order, appoint, from ordin-, ordo order] verb transitive 14th century
1: to invest officially (as by the laying on of hands) with ministerial or priestly authority
2 a: to establish or order by appointment, decree, or law: enact 〈we the people … do ordain and establish this Constitution—U.S. Constitution
b: destine, foreordain verb intransitive: to issue an order—or•dain•er noun—or•dain•ment \-ˈdān-mənt\ noun
In modern times we look at the laying on of hands as an act of ordination. If you’ve never been to an ordination service, they are extremely powerful, full of the Holy Spirit. We, in our denomination, view ordination as the recognition of the call of God that has already been placed on a life, and recognizing that call into ministry. It is taken from several passages in the new testament.
1 Timothy 4:11–16 ESV
11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
I Tim. 4:11
A similar call is being shown here in Leviticus, but it seems to be more. Let me tell you what I think is happening here.

Leviticus 8:33–36 ESV
33 And you shall not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for it will take seven days to ordain you. 34 As has been done today, the Lord has commanded to be done to make atonement for you. 35 At the entrance of the tent of meeting you shall remain day and night for seven days, performing what the Lord has charged, so that you do not die, for so I have been commanded.” 36 And Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord commanded by Moses.

I am currently taking classes to pursue my credentials. One of the classes I have to take is Prison Epistles: Colossians, Philemon, Ephesians, & Philippians. These are the letters that Paul wrote while in Prison in Rome. So I decided to take a small break from Leviticus & focus on some of these letters, so that I might be able to get a better understanding even during my devotions. I started Saturday. Here was the text that I used:
Col. 1:1-
Colossians 1:1–12 ESV
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit. 9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
Did you catch the link there to the passage? It’s right there in verse 9.

A (Application)
I think that there is a link between these two texts
The link of course is the Holy Spirit making us complete.
Think for a minute about what Christ came to do. He came that we might have full relationship with the Father.
We have that through Christ’s death on the cross, but can’t fully experience it while we are here on earth, but the Holy Spirit brings the presence of God here.
The Gospel of John gives a foretaste of the role of the Holy Spirit.
John 16:5–15 ESV
5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
John 15:5–15 ESV
5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
The Holy Spirit will:
Convict the world concerning sin & righteousness & judgment
Will Guide into all truth
Will speak on God’s authority,
Will tell of things to come
Will glorify Jesus
Will declare the Father to us
Back to ring Illustration
The Holy Spirit will complete us
We are the setting for the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the gem in the ring
The bigger we allow Jesus to be in our lives, the more people will notice Him and not the setting that is us.
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
It is not you that people will see, but God!
