Sermon Tone Analysis

Written by David to the Chief Musician, leader of the musical group in the Temple.

Creation declares (makes known) God's glory to all mankind.

- v. 1-6

Explanation: As the sun's light reaches every corner of the earth, Creation speaks to the earth God's glory.

v. 1 Glory of God - honor, majesty, splendor, riches

The immense celestial bodies announce His powerful work.

handywork - finalized, powerful work of His hands

v. 2 - His creation speaks of Him from sunrise to sundown, and sundown to sunrise.

v. 3 - His glory is proclaimed to ALL people with no barrier.

We hear the voice of God in creation by seeing His wisdom and power.

Certainly so complex an entity as our universe (and the universes beyond our own universe) demands a Creator and Sustainer.

To believe that the universe evolved out of nothing and arranged itself in this orderly manner is folly.

v. 4 - The chord that is played in Creation can be heard to the extent of the world.

, The wrath of God toward sin is revealed in Creation.

v. 5 - The sunrise shows God’s glory.

v. 6 - There is nothing on earth hid from the heat of the sun.

Application: The world is without excuse.

Every day is a reminder as we wake and sleep, move from season to season, of a life without God.

6  The voice said, Cry.

And he said, What shall I cry?

All flesh is pgrass,

And all the goodliness thereof is as pthe flower of the field:

7  qThe grass withereth, the flower fadeth:

Because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it:

Surely the people is grass.

8  The grass withereth, the flower fadeth:

But the word of our God shall stand for ever.

The activities of nature under God’s hand are vivid lessons to sinners that wherever they are geographically, they stand condemned before God.

The Law/Word of God declares His Glory and righteousness to all mankind, even the naive, lacking intelligence.

- v. 7-11

Explanation: The perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, everlasting, true, righteous, sweet, word of God declares God's righteousness and makes known to us our unrighteousness.

What the Bible is:

v. 7 perfect (no error), sure(unchangeable, reliable); v. 8 right (guidelines), pure (does not lead us to sin, empty of evil); v. 9 clean (result of fearing God), true and righteous (trustworthy, right, knows all things); v. 10 better than gold (treasure), sweeter than honey (spiritual appetite does not need the artificial things of this world to satisfy)

What the Bible does:

v. 7 converts (heals, restores to purpose), makes wise (); v. 8 rejoices (joy), enlightens (sheds light) ; Endures (eternal); v. 10 enriches (more profitable than earthly goods), satisfies (honey-body Word-soul); v. 11 warns(prevents and avoids sin), [great] rewards (clean conscience, pure heart, joy, peace)

but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Application: The proper view of who God is, revealed in His word, gives even the most simple mind a glimpse of his own sinfulness.

Illustration: baking a cake and making it look easy

God's glory is declared in my life when I yield myself to Him. - v. 12-14

All of this should lead us to confession and prayer.

Explanation: A glimpse of God's righteousness and Jesus' perfect keeping of His Law reveals to mankind His need.

v. 12 - We are incapable of understanding even our own hearts therefore we must pray for cleansing.

cleanse: make me without blame

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

v. 13 - We should hate the lordship of sin in our own lives.

presumptuous: arrogant, proud

God sees us as upright and blameless from numerous/many/all our transgressions.

v. 14 - The meditation of your heart controls the words of your mouth.

34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?

for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Who controls the music of your heart?

As the heart and mind think on the Word of God throughout the day, the Spirit guides your life.

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and mye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Application: We must have a spirit of repentance, declaring our dependency upon God even in knowing the depth of our own sinfulness.

We must rely on Him alone for the proper meditation and words as He is our Rock and our Redeemer (the One who claims me as His own).

Illustration: feeling pretty good about a test until the actual score is revealed, we feel good about ourselves until God’s holiness is viewed.

Application: Repent of the self-glorifying life, knowing that you can't even keep track of all of your own sins.

Pray for God's forgiveness and grace to keep you from the dominion of sin, that your life might be acceptable in His sight, giving all glory to God.
