Introduction

Our text today is – one of the finest passages in the Bible and indeed in all of literature.

Greetings

I would like to thank you all for having me here today as well as my wife, Olga and my son, CJ.
Me gustaria agradacerles por invitarme aquí hoy. Tambien a mi esposa, Olga, y my hijo, Cesar.
A special thank you goes to Hermano Antonio Perez for his invitation to be here today.
Our family has long been familiar with your church and we have always respected the work that you all do for the name of Christ in the Hispanic community of Forth Worth.
I wish you all a very happy Independence Day. While yesterday was Independence Day here in the US, today is Venezuela’s Independence Day.
We continue to pray fervently for Venezuela and for the safety of our family there and for the spread of the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in Venezuela.
The last holiday I spent here at Getsemani was an Easter Sunday celebration. This has been quite some time ago. We had family in town and came to visit so that my English speaking parents and my wife’s Spanish speaking sister could all worship our Lord Jesus Christ together.
My son was about 5-years old, so we put him in his Sunday School class and we all enjoyed the service. It was a beautiful day, with a full church bustling with activity.
After the service, we picked up my son and he had all the expected coloring pages and handouts.
He also had a brightly colored Easter egg. So it was my job, as his father, to carry all his papers and his backpack and of course the treasured Easter egg.
Remember, that we were all dressed up in our Easter best. I was wearing my best suit and tie. But I had my hands so full and I needed to hold my son’s hand.
After all, his mother had some socializing to do. Men, you know how it is.
1 Corinthians 13:1–13 NASB95
1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.
So the papers got folded and stuffed into one pocket and the hard boiled Easter egg got shoved into another pocket.
It wasn’t until later as I was climbing into the car that I discovered – to my surprise – that the egg was not hard boiled, but raw.
As you might guess, my first clue of this fact was the cold and sticky wet sensation of egg running down my leg and soaking through my suit.
Now, I’m not sure how you guys are celebrating this weekend’s holiday, but if anybody hands me any firecrackers, I promise not to them in my pockets!
I was pleased to see Getsemani’s Facebook cover photo updated this week with a clear statement of your position on the definition of marriage.
I know many churches big and small are struggling with communicating their position on the difficult topic. I was in a church in Austin last Sunday that hadn’t really figured out how to state their position on same sex marriage. So, it’s nice to see a church that doesn’t have to struggle with this. Congratulations!
Felicitaciones!
There is so much division these days. We are absolutely bombarded by division.
Hay tanta división en estos días. Estamos absolutamente bombardeados por división.
It is nice to know that: in spite of what's going on in the world today: | Es bueno saber que: a pesar de lo que está pasando en el mundo de hoy:
· with the Supreme Court decision | con la decisión del Tribunal Supremo
· with political strife and the threat of war in every newscast | con la lucha política y la amenaza de guerra en todos las noticias
· with more racism and hatred than I have ever seen in my lifetime | con más racismo y el odio de lo que he visto en toda mi vida
We can all agree on one thing ...
That – for once – it’s kind of nice to see Donald Trump get fired!
But seriously there is one much more important thing that we can agree on... God is Here!
· Without a doubt God is here with us today at Getsemani Baptist Church.
· God is here in Fort Worth and throughout the Great State of Texas.
· And in spite of the deafening voice of popular opinion as seen on social media, we know that we serve a God who is present and active in the United States of America.
· We also can stand firm in the assurance that God is in control no matter what happens in the world.
Paul’s Great Message
After all, we've read his book and while we know things will get worse before they gets better, we know that it will indeed get better before it's all said and done.
We live in a day where wrong is confused for right and right is rejected as wrong.
But the Bible tells us in Isaiah, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil." ()
God called us to come as we are... not to stay as we are.
Our job as Christians is to rise up to be who God wants us to be.
There is a reason that God has set us apart. And there is a reason that God has put Getsemani right here in Fort Worth, Texas.
Paul’s great message here was not a message for couples or for families.
God calls us to be Salt and Light in the world – We must be willing to be bold for Christ!
We must live out our Christian lives in maturity, with bold compassion for the lost.
And that brings us to our text for today.
I hope you have your Bible or have an app on your phone, because today we’re going to study the Bible. We will also have the scripture displayed on the screens.

Our text today is – one of the finest passages in the Bible and indeed in all of literature.
1 Corinthians 13
Paul’s great message here was not a message for couples or for families.
Paul’s great message here was not a message for couples or for families.
It was not an ode to romantic love.
It was not an ode to romantic love.
It was not an artistic print to hang on the walls in our home.
No fue una poema al amor romántico.
It was not an artistic print to hang on the walls in our home.
Instead it was a corrective message to a troubled church.
Instead it was a corrective message to a troubled church.
And it is a message that we often forget in our church dealings today.
And it is a message that we often forget in our church dealings today.
Corinth was similar to modern day America:
Corinth was similar to modern day America:
There was little love for others.
There was a constant, self-centered focus
There was an inappropriate emphasis on sexual gratification.
· There was little love for others. | Hubo poco de amor por los demás.
There was a proliferation of free thought that lacked a foundation in biblical principles.
· There was a constant self-centered focus | Hubo un enfoque egocéntrico constante
Much of this corruption in society had crept into the church at Corinth.
· There was an inappropriate emphasis on sexual gratification.
· There was a proliferation of free thought that lacked a foundation in biblical principles.
Much of this corruption in society had creeped into the church at Corinth.
The Church at Corinth was troubled:
The Church at Corinth was troubled:
They were impatient with each other.
· They were impatient with each other. | Estaban impacientes con los demás
They were envious of each other’s gifts.
They were prideful and arrogant about what they had.
· They were envious of each other’s gifts.
They were competing for position at the communion table.
They were even suing each other.
· They were prideful and arrogant about what they had.
Paul’s message to the Corinthian church was actually a rebuke.
· They were competing for position at the communion table.
· They were even suing each other. | Se demandaban unos a otros
That’s where Paul’s message comes in as a rebuke. However, as Paul writes, he wraps his rebuke in a message of love.
However, as Paul writes, he wraps his rebuke in a message of love.

I. Love Enriches (v 1-3)

Love Enriches | El Amor Enriquece
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 NASB95
1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. – ESV

Anything we do without Love is worthless:
–1 Corintios 13:1-3 RVA
Anything we do without Love is worthless:
Anything we do without Love is worthless: | Cualquier cosa que hacemos sin amor no vale nada:
Westboro Baptist is not one of us. They are an unaffiliated Baptist Church and are recognized globally for their hateful message of homophobia, antisemitism, and anti-militarism. They are basically a hate group that goes to highly publicized events with the posters that say “God Hates Gays!”
Rubbing your wife's feet – Action without love is kind of like rubbing your wife’s feet when you don’t really want to.

Westboro Baptist is a church, even if it is on that acts without the Love of God. Rubbing your wife's feet – Hermanos, action without love is kind of like rubbing your wife’s feet when you don’t really want to. Women, tell me if I’m wrong here. Isn’t it like, “Why bother?!? Just forget it!”

TRUTH When you perform an act of love without being loving it’s a waste of time and energy.
says to speak the truth in love. This kind of truth leads us to growing in maturity.
says to speak the truth in love. This kind of truth leads us to growing in maturity.
That means love “adds to” rather than “takes away from” things.
PRINCIPLE Love enriches everything it touches rather than destroying and tearing down.
When you are in a relationship are you excited about what you get out of that relationship or what you can put into that relationship to improve the life of your partner?
That means love “adds to” rather than “takes away from” things.
Love enriches everything it touches rather than destroying and tearing down.
Let's learn THAT kind of love! GOD’s Love is Agape Love:
Paul’s message to Corinth was not a message of:
Let's learn THAT kind of love!
phileo love – a spontaneous natural affection based in feelings that friendship displays.
· This was not storge love – a Greek word that describes the love that a parent has for his children or that family members share.

eros love – a passionate love between lovers.

romantic love – some lofty, unreachable ideal that cannot be maintained beyond courtship.
· This was not romantic love – some lofty, unreachable ideal that cannot be maintained beyond courtship.
It was agape love is God’s love.
· This agape love is God’s love.
ἀγάπη - agapē - love, goodwill
Agape Love is a love of action rather than feeling. A love that requires a strong will, a deliberate choice.
This love tells us how to love our neighbor, our family, our enemies, and even our fellow church members.
This love tells us how to love our neighbor, our family, our enemies, and even our fellow church members.
Agape love seeks to bless and works on behalf of another person, just the way that God did for us.
Agape love seeks to bless and works on behalf of another person, just the way that God did for us.
Agape love obeys God’s will even when God’s will makes no sense from a human perspective.
Agape love obeys God’s will even when God’s will makes no sense from a human perspective.
Agape love means to love the undeserving and unlovely in spite of the anticipated disappointment and rejection.
Agape love means to love the undeserving and unlovely in spite of the anticipated disappointment and rejection.
Agape love is what sets a Christian apart from the crowd.
Agape love is what sets a Christian apart from the crowd.

Luke 6:27–36 NASB95
27 “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 “Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either. 30 “Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you. 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 “If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 “If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. 36 “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

II. Love Edifies (v 4-7)

| Lucas 6:27-36

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 NASB95
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love should always build up rather than tear down.

1 Cor
Sure we hang this on the wall of our home, but do we really live like this?
Sure we hang this on the wall of our home, but do we really live like this?

Love Edifies | El Amor Edifica

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. – ESV
– 1 Corintios 13:4-7 RVA
Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver'sTravels, one said "We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.” [Thoughts on Various Subjects from Miscellanies (1711-1726)]
Sure we hang this on the wall of our home, but do we really live like this?

This verse from Phillippians has been my life verse for some 35 years:
Philippians 2:3–4 NASB95
3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
This verse from Phillippians has been my life verse for some 35 years:
This requires love.... sacrificial love.
u Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. – Phillippians 2:3-4 ESV
– Filipenses 2:3-4 RVA
We aren't expected to do this only with our loved ones or children. We have to do this beyond extended family gatherings. We have to give sacrificial love to our brothers and sisters in Christ. And truthfully we have to be willing to extend that love to visitors in the church and to unbelievers in our workplace and in the marketplace.
This requires love.... sacrificial love. | Pero eso requieres el amor .... amor sacrificial.
The world knows this and when they see us, honestly they find us lacking.
Penn Jillette
The world knows this and when they see us, honestly they find us lacking.
Penn Jillette, the talking half of the Penn & Teller magic act is a well-known atheist. He tells the story of the time that a fan approached him after one of his shows and handed him a New Testament in an act of evangelism.

If I believed beyond a shadow of a doubt that a truck was coming at you and you didn't believe it, and that truck was bearing down on you, there's a certain point where I tackle you. And this is more important than that."
But we don’t.
We don’t evangelize like we should. We don’t share the Good News that we have. We don’t act at all like Christians should act.
We live our lives exactly like the world that rages around us.
Pero no lo hacemos. No evangelizamos como deberíamos. No compartimos la Buena Nueva que tenemos. No actuamos como los cristianos deben actuar.
Ephesians 4:31–32 NASB95
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

III. Love Endures (v 8-12)

Love is durable. It is not going to blow away in the first storm that comes along. It’s not like some cheap carnival toy that will fall apart the first time you play with it.
1 Corinthians 13:8–12 NASB95
8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.

Love Endures | El Amor Perdura

The Church at Corinth was acting like children. They had no agape love to guide them. They were acting out of selfishness and self-serving motives.
u Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. – ESV
– 1 Corintios 13:8-12 RVA

Paul is telling us here to put away childish things and grow up.
Paul is telling us here to put away childish things and grow up.
Christian maturity comes from love.

Paul tells us…
2 Timothy 2:23–25 NASB95
23 But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels. 24 The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,

IV. Love Exceeds (v 13)

IV. Love Exceeds
This is precisely the kind of love that God has for us.
We weigh love in human terms and know that human love is fickle.
But God’s love is nothing at all like human love.
God’s love is perfect love.
Of course the greatest example that we have of God’s love is when he sent his son, Jesus Christ to die for us on the Cross.
Of course the greatest example that we have of God’s love is when he sent his son, Jesus Christ to die for us on the Cross.
John 15:13 NASB95
13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
… said the greatest human lover of all time, Jesus Christ.
Of course the greatest example that we have of God’s love is when he sent his son, Jesus Christ to die for us on the Cross.
John 3:16–17 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
Question: How does God’s love need to impact your life?
u For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. –
In conclusion I would like to ask you, “How does God’s love need to impact your life?”

– Juan 3:16-17
