To the Jew, worship was the idea of prayer & sacrifice
Abraham -the first time that worship is used
This involved great sacrifice, obedience & faith
David is known as a worshipper because of his psalms, Solomon -dedicated the temple with worship -and it included sacrificing 120,000 sheep!
Worship is the idea of turning to God
It can be the natural response when seeing God for who he really is.

We don’t worship because of head knowledge we worship because of revelation.
2. What did Jesus say about worship?
Jesus defines true worship in
John 4:23
The Jews and Samaritians had a head knowledge that they were supposed to worship.
They went through the formalities, but that is not what God wanted
Jesus defines vain (worthless) worship
Teachings and lifestyles that focus on making people look good, but the heart is not engaged.
3. What are things that can remind us to maintain a lifestyle of worship?
Having God’s word in our heart
Interesting that he did not say “mind” but “heart”
He sought the Lord with his whole heart -the core of who he was
The word “hid” has the idea of protect and esteem

Is there scripture in your house?
In your vehicle?
At your office?
4. What is worship to us as New Covenant believers?
It is doing everything to glorify God
In the New Covenant, we do not bring an animal to sacrifice, instead we bring ourselves
The term “worship service” is never mentioned in the Bible but this is the definition -dying to our selfish ways and instead presenting ourselves in service to God
Don’t think like a person who hasn’t encountered Christ, let your mind be renewed by the washing of the water of the Word.
“Not my will, but your will be done”
Paul goes on to define this “Lifestyle of Worship” particularly in verses 9-21
Don’t see these as a list of commands -rather these are like sign posts telling us whether we encountered the Lord -fruit of the Spirit of God will then be evident in our life
In Paul deals with specific problems that the church as dealing with -things that were causing problems in their corporate worship.
Instead of harmony in their worship, there was strife.
There are times we need to be fully persuaded in our own mind -and be ok with our differences
There are times that we need to not do everything we feel we have the right to do -because we love each other so much that we do what it takes to not grieve our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Maybe this will be a temporary sacrifice.
How long are we willing to sacrifice our “rights” for the benefit of someone else?
It is interesting that Paul didn’t rebuke those who were being “religious”
One of Paul’s closing thoughts on this subject is in
The kingdom is not about freedom of our rights but
doing what is right,
living in peace and
joy as we are in the Holy Spirit -this is lifestyle worship.
Paul deals with this same subject in
In his closing about this subject, his one thought is “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” -and this is how we worship God in our life.
We don’t worship because of head knowledge we worship because of revelation.
5. What are the signs of an encounter with God -that we received a revelation from God -that we experienced his tangible presence?
Well, it depends :)
But let’s look at a few verses

Are you being led in a path of life?
Are experiencing the fulness of joy?
Have you experienced His pleasure of you?
If so -you have experienced His presence…it will change you…you will never be the same
Ex 34:6-7
Has he shown you His mercy -His graciousness?
Is it good to seek for his presence and his power?
Paul’s prayer
Eph 1:15-
We worship with our whole being because of the revelation of God in our heart -in our spirit
Let’s worship through the sacrifice of our will, through the sacrifice of our life!
