Matthew 5:17–20 NASB95
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:17-

Three Aspects of the OT Law and Prophets.

1. The Torah (Revealed Instruction)

In the Torah are all the biblical doctrines, but only revealed in part.
Rose Bud in early spring is the promise of a flower.

2. The O.T. contains Predictive Prophesy

Jesus fulfilled the OT prophecies with respect to the ceremonial law.
‘It was only the use of them that was abolished, for their meaning was more fully confirmed.’ They were but a ‘shadow’ of what was to come; the ‘substance’ belonged to Christ. John Calvin

3. The O.T. Contains God’s Moral Law.

Stott, J. R. W., & Stott, J. R. W. (1985). The message of the Sermon on the mount (): Christian counter-culture (pp. 71–72). Leicester; Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.
Jesus fulfilled it in two ways.
He obeyed it.
The Message of the Sermon on the Mount 1. Christ and the Law (17, 18)

He has in fact nothing to add to the commandments of God,’ wrote Bonhoeffer, ‘except this, that he keeps them.’

2. He explained how we obey it.

Our Responsibility

Matthew 5:19 NASB95
“Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
We should know and understand the OT.
We should have a reverence for the OT.

Are you sure we don’t have to follow all the OT rituals?

Matthew
Mark 7:14–23 NASB95
After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable. And He said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?” (Thus He declared all foods clean.) And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. “All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”
Matthew 5:20 NASB95
“For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

If you don’t follow God’s moral law --- You are outside God’s will.
But Just because you follow his commandments doesn’t mean you don’t have a rebellious heart.
Matthew 5:20 NASB95
“For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Jeremiah 31:33 NASB95
“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Ezekiel 36:27 NASB95
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.
We have Three enemies:
The Devil
The World
The Flesh
The scribes and Pharisees were winning the battle with the world, but were losing the battle of the flesh.

1. Get into the Word!

2. Confess Sin quickly!

3. Talk to God!
