Christ knows his church.

Revelation 2:2 ESV
“ ‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false.
Revelation 3:1 ESV
“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “ ‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
Revelation 3:8 ESV
“ ‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
Listen - Jesus has a better understanding of Rehobeth Baptist Church than we do of ourselves.

Christ’s evaluation of Rehobeth Baptist Church is the one that really matters.

Not only does Christ know the church collectively but he knows you personally.

Christ loves his church.

Christ’s love confronts.

Revelation 2:4 ESV
But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
Rev 2
Revelation 2:14 ESV
But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality.
Revelation 2:20 ESV
But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.
To the church @ Laodicea Christ warns:
Revelation 3:15 ESV
15 “ ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!
Jesus said the church at Laodicea was much like its water supply - of very little value.
Hot water - medicinal value!
Cold water - refreshing!
It doesn’t heal or refresh - it is worthless and nauseating!
You make me sick!

Biblical love is at times in your face!

Christ’s love corrects.

Revelation 2:5 ESV
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.
Rev 2
He said to the church at Pergamum
Rev 2
Revelation 2:16 ESV
Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.
Revelation 3:3 ESV
Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.
Revelation 3:19 ESV
Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

What distinguishes the people of God from those of the world?

Revelation 9:20 ESV
The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk,
Revelation 9:21 ESV
nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
Revelation 16:9 ESV
They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.
Rev
Revelation 9:16 ESV
The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number.
Revelation 16:11 ESV
and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds.
Rev

The church is marked by repentance while the world does not repent.

What is it that Christ wants to see in our church?

REPENTANCE

What type of sinners make up the church of Jesus Christ?

We are repenting sinners.

Repenting Sinners!

Christ’s love cautions.

Christ loves his church enough to say that sin has devastating consequences.

Revelation 2:5 ESV
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.
If the church is an unrepentant church then it will cease to be a church! Christ said I will close it down.
The church at Thyatira - had a false teacher who Christ calls Jezebel. This teacher was leading some within the church to embrace heresy and immorality.
Revelation 2:20–23 ESV
20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.
Christ says he is about to judge the heretic and those who embrace her heresy!
To the church @ Sardis Christ cautions.
Revelation 3:3 ESV
3 Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.
Rev 3
Judgment is coming against the church suddenly and unexpectedly.
Revelation 3:15 ESV
15 “ ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!
Jesus said the church at Laodicea was much like its water supply - of very little value.

Christ wants the church to know that sin is serious and leads to ruin.

Hot water - medicinal value!
Cold water - refreshing!

Christ’s love comforts.

It doesn’t heal or refresh - it is worthless and nauseating!

Christ comforts by identifying with his church in their suffering.

He is the one in the middle of the lamp stands.
You make me sick!
The church of Smyrna was ground zero for Christian persecution.
Jesus tells them:
Revelation 2:10 ESV
10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
They were about to suffer and face death.
Jesus reminds them that
Revelation 2:8 ESV
8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.

Christ comforts by blessing those who remain faithful.

Christ spoke to the church at Pergamum those who had been blackballed and he said Ill give you a white stone.
The world might reject you but I have accepted you.
Revelation 3:5–6 ESV
5 The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
Rev 3
What a great motivator! Your names are written in heaven.
Luke 10:20 ESV
20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Christ comforts by promising a total reversal of the present circumstances.

Revelation 3:8–9 ESV
8 “ ‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you.
Rev 3:8-
The church at Philadelphia had been shut out of the Synagogue. They were being publicly humiliated at the feet of the leadership of the Synagogue. They were being told that they were outcast from the Lord!
Jesus promises to completely change that!
