Review
God wants us to serve Him with wholeheartedness; to serve Him for the long haul.
In doing so, we must keep our heart and eyes focused on God’s promise and Word spoken to us - continuing with unfinished business not Caleb did.
God desires us to serve Him with tenacity, not allowing anything or any excuse to cause us to quit.
We must serve God with determination and dependency.
What happens when life seems good, we have obtained victories, we have conquered giants, we have made it to the Promised land and received at least some of the promises God had given us; and with tenacity we are holding on and trusting God to fulfill the rest of His promise - but then a bump in the road comes along?

The Promise
Give history of Terah and Abraham
God made a covenant/agreement with Abraham.
What was the covenant?
Genesis 12:
God promised Abraham descendants that the land of Caanan would be given to those descendants.
Abraham made it to Caanan, as did Isaac and Jacob.
God reaffirmed His covenant with Isaac
Genesis 26:1-
And again with Jacob
Genesis 28:12-15
Things seem to go well for the journey of Abraham’s descendants - they do go into the land of Caanan and set up life for themselves.
And then look what happens
:
Joshua 2:
Esau gets to go to Caanan while Jacobs descendants - the chosen ones with whom God had chosen to carry out His covenant - gets to go into Egypt which eventually lead to a life of slavery.
It seems as though the chosen ones ended up with the raw end of the deal, as though they got the short stick.
They seem to be going AWAY from the Promised Land
Although from every appearance it may seem this way we must remember the words spoken in
God’s thoughts are very different from ours and sometimes they may not make sense to us.
These mystifying events in our lives can have benefits we may not see at first!
Benefit #1:
Hardships Produces Iron in the Soul
Exodus 1:12
Although Pharoah called for the murder of Israelite baby boys to try and clamp down on God’s people, it didn’t work.
Instead, this adversity produced tenacity and endurance.
Do you think the idea that hardship produces benefits is hard for people in society as well as inside the church to appreciate today?
Why or why not?
What do you think is the goal of most people?
Ease, comfort, self-gratification.
Many people find it hard to believe that challenges and struggles might just be part of God’s plan for our lives to benefit us.
Romans
What are some experiences of the early church?
Often people are told they don’t have enough faith; or if only they said the right words, or only if they claimed the right things and prayed the right prayers there would be no problems, no sickness, etc.
BUT what does God’s Word say?
Trials are a part of Christian territory!
These trials or hardships develop us into mature Christians
Romans
Coaches have strategies their players may not understand or see.
God has and uses strategies we may not understand or see.
Benefit #2
Hardships Drive us to Prayer
When mysterious happenings /hardships take place in our lives, it causes us to begin praying in a different way.
From previous Scripture we looked at, we see that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob prayed to God; but we don’t see any indication that their descendants prayed- UNTIL
What kind of praying people does God want?
Jeremiah 29
Prayers that say I must hear from God!!
This is how Paul prayed in
Galatians
E.M. Bounds - Methodist teacher on prayer
“Fervor-less prayer has no heart in it; it is an empty thing, an unfit vessel.
Heart, soul, and life must find place in all real praying.
Heaven must be made to feel the force of this crying unto God”
James says the same thing
James
Fervent prayer was forged in the lives of the Israelites as they suffered.
What was the result?
God heard them and responded.
Benefit #3
Hardships Give us a Story to Tell
The third benefit hardships give us is a real - life testimony to tell.
It is so important that our younger generation know that serving God is more than a list of do’s and don’t’s - its a relationship, an incredible story.
It’s about God’s power and His faithfulness.
It’s all about God.
Psalm 105:
To whom does Paul tell his experience to?
- the mob that wanted to stone him
- the Roman governor
- King Agrippa and his wife
When God does things in and for us, it is not because its about me, myself, and I.
He does things for us that overflow into the lives of others.
Paul tell his experience to?6
The unwanted, troubling, senseless things that happen to us in our lives are occasions to instill strength in our character, force us to pray as never before, and give us a testimony to help others in need.
It is a sign that we were made for more!
