Introduction
Today is Super Bowl Sunday.
Many people in our country will be watching the Philadelphia Eagles play the New England Patriots.
If you pay very careful attention you might spot a sign, a t-shirt, or someone’s face painted with these words: .
This is a bible verse that many of us memorized as new christians.
This is probably the most important verse of the New Testament for it speaks to us about:
God’s love
God’s Son
God’s judgement
God’s salvation
I. God’s love

The apostle John immediately begins this passage by pointing us to God’s love.
We are told of that God showed his love for the world.
Let us not forget the God of the Bible is a God of love.
In fact this same author writes in : “God is love”.
Now, this is extraordinary because since the beginning of time we are told about man’s rebellion against God.
God formed Adam and Eve.
They were perfect in every way and yet they decided to turn away from God is disobedience.
During Noah’s lifetime we see depraved humanity sinning continually against God.
Many years later, we see people offering their children as living sacrifices to the idols, burning their children upon their altars.
God sends his Son and the Jews and Romans put him to death, even death by crucifixion.
Fast forward to the last 100 years and we see wars, man’s greed for more wealth, abuse of the weak, racism, abortion, and many other sins — and yet the Bible says that God loved the world.
Why would God love the world?
Why would God insist in loving humanity?
There is nothing God in us that would make us deserve God’s love.
God loves the world because of his great mercy and compassion.
We are his creation and God has determined to express his love upon his creatures.

How did God love the world?
In what way has God shown his love to humanity?
God sent his Son.
The Father sent his one and only Son to this world do die on behalf of all those that would believe in him.
God sent his Son, knowing that he would be lifted up upon a cross, just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert.
That is the extent to which God loved the world that he gave that which was most precious to him — his only Son.
He sent his Son to die for a rebellious people.
He sent his Son to die for God-haters.
He sent his Son to die for racists.
He sent his Son to die for the worst of sinners.
For this reason, many of John’s followers were confused when people started to follow Jesus.
In we read of their concern that Jesus was now baptizing and people were following him and not John the Baptist.

Nevertheless, John knows that he is not the Savior.
John is not the Messiah.
John had said he was not the Christ.

John had been sent by God to announce the coming of the Messiah.
John was just as much a sinner as we are — he was a sinner who needed to be forgiven of his sins.
John was a sinful man.
He too had the stain of sin upon his life.
No matter how holy John was, he was righteous enough to enter heaven.
God’s son would have to die and suffer a sinner’s death.
He had to die and receive the punishment for our sins upon himself.
John was a sinner who was under God’s just condemnation.

Many times when we see we rightfully think of God’s love.
It is proper that we think of a loving God.
But God is not all love.
God certainly expresses love but that is not all.
speaks to us about those who “perish”.
speaks to us about the condemnation of the world.
speaks about God’s “wrath”.
These three verses speak to us about judgement, condemnation, God carrying out justice towards those who have sinned, against those who have broken his law.
May I ask you tonight, do you deserve to be judged by God?
Many people would respond and say: “Well, I know that I am not perfect but I am not as bad as many other people.
I have not murdered, I have not committed terrible crimes.”
While all this may be true, we are simply deceiving ourselves.
The Bible is God’s word.
The Bible does not lie.
Romans 3:
All of humanity stands guilty before God.
There is no one righteous.
We all deserve eternal hell as a just punishment for our sins.
We have sinned against a most Holy and Eternal God.
Many will experience judgement during the time of great tribulation that will come upon the earth prior to second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ .
Revelation
Many, however, will experience God’s just condemnation immediately after they have breathed their last breath.
One minute they are alive upon this earth and suddenly they are dead and find themselves engulfed by the flames of hell.

But God has loved the world that he sent his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life!
Forgiveness is possible because of Jesus.
We can be forgiven and put into a right relationship with God.
God has promised that if believe in Jesus Christ he will cover our sins by the power of his blood.
Those who repent of their sins are those who have truly believed in Jesus.
We are made a new creation.
God creates in us a new heart.
We no longer desire to live in our sin but rather serve God and forsake our old way of live.
You would think that all of humanity would be breaking down the church doors to ask God for the forgiveness of their sins.
If this is all that’s required to be forgiven, you would think many would accept God’s offer of salvation.
But the Bible tells us the reason why many do not believe.
In fact, the Bible tells us why many of you who sit in the congregation today have not surrendered your lives to Jesus.
