Notice verse 1.
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us....
john urges the church here to see.. in the greek it points to - to have realised, perceived” == “to know.
to know how great a love the Father has bestowed..
to have realised, perceived” == “to know
immediately i think about
Paul tell is to realize.. to understand this love in regards to Sonship.
this love that He, the Father has given is in terms of relationship with Him.
look with me at
John 17
Jesus says, you have loved them, even as you have loved me.
this flows my mind because jesus states that the Father loved man with the same love that He loved Jesus.
Kittel, G., Bromiley, G. W., & Friedrich, G. (Eds.).
(1964–).
Theological dictionary of the New Testament (electronic ed.).
Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans.
Jesus is the Son of God.
If the Father loves us like he loves the Son Jesus that means the Father loves us like a son of God.
i say it again,
Jesus the Son of God, became the Son of Man so that man could become sons of God.
John 3:1
“See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us...
bestowed, meaning to give.
also translated, allow, grant, permit and to put..
he gave..
He put this kind of love upon us.
that we should be called the children of God.
(NASB95)
called is the greek word Kaleo also translated invited
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
He gave us the right to become children of God.
look at the end of 1 john chapter 3:1
john
For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
Listen to me closely… you should not fit in..
you like should testify that there is something different about you.
if you walk, look, and sound like the world there is a problem.
if you are just sliding through the world… everybody loves you.. its probably a sign you are living with some kind of compromise
Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
godly or in a godly manner you will be persecuted.
because the world did not recognize you, because it didn't recognize him.
so don’t be surprised
now in verse 2 we see an important distinction
What a great love this is, that I can be called a child of God and when I see Him I shall be like Him.
Every time I see Him in a new way I am changed.
Every time I behold Him I am changed forever.
I am transformed to that which I see.
When I see Him being compassionate, I become more compassionate.
When I see His love, I become more loving.
When I see His heart, He changes my heart.
this seeing Him speaks of transformation.
transformation to the same image that we behold.
our text says..
when we see him, we shall be like him.
i know… all my theologian out there are saying .. this is eschatology.. what John is saying is futuristic and will have at the second coming of jesus.
but i submit to you that, This is both a present and futuristic promise.
Today I am a son and verse 3
john here is speaking of the work of sanctification in the believer..
a process of transformation… sanctification is a part of sonship and if you do not enter into it.. i don’t care what you soteriology is… you will not see God
(NASB95)
14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.
The goal of sanctification is that we be “conformed to the image of His Son.” God, who foreknew us, has predetermined what we will be.
Hebrew 12 uses the word pursue.
the church has lost its testimony because we have lost the desire to pursue.
we get easily satisfied.
we chase after other things… we forget that it all about Jesus and we neglect such a great love that the father has bestowed upon us…
that we get to be the sons of God.
NOW, NOW WE ARE THE SONS OF GOD
when He appears, we will be like Him..
when He comes in all His glory we will be like him.. taken off the corrupt nature.
but until that day, we must pursue Him.
Watchman Nee says, “His drawing power is our pursuing power.”
He has bestowed such a love on us.. he has called us sons of God.. this is not a losing battle..
He will transform us..
He will sanctify us
and everone who has this hope in Him.
will purify himself.. just as He (jesus) is pure.
the hope is being like Him, and being like Him is not like being like the word
the word purify is the word hagnizō; meaning; to purify, cleanse from defilement..
in essence to make holy.
sanctification is separation.. not just from but to.
(NASB95)
hagnizō; from 53; to purify, cleanse from defilement
17 “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord.
“And do not touch what is unclean;
And I will welcome you.
18 “And I will be a father to you,
And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,”
Says the Lord Almighty.
and sanctification is apart of sonship
What is Sanctification?
What is Sanctification?
Sanctification is the process of being set apart for God's work and being conformed to the image of Christ.
This conforming to Christ involves the work of the person.
But it is still God working in the believer to produce more of a godly character and life in the person who has already been justified.
a word sanctify is the Greek word hagiazo (hag-ee-ad'- zo) meaning “to make holy”.
Also, it means “to purify” or “to consecrate”.
listen, stop waiting on heaven to bear fruits of sonship..
we are the sons of God now.. and we should look like him in the earth.
we should own a testimony.
