I. INTRO

A. Greeting

a. Who I am

B. Where we’re going

a. prayed a great deal about what God wants 2 communicate 2 u

1. No amount o preaching u haven’t heard, nor studying u can’t get frm these great teachers here.

2. So, what do I have 2 offer u that u can’t get frm the folks here?

3. I had a simple thought:

i. If I never got a chance to speak w/this group again, what would I communicate?
ii. God proceeded to remind me o a simple vs & I knew what I MUST pass on 2 u.

b. Illust.

1. have u ever done a book report?

i. You get to know a lot about the book
- what happened
- Who’s involved
- how the story ends
ii. the problem is,
- you can get to know a lot about a person when u read a book (especially an auto-biography)
- but u can never get to know a person
iii. Diff. btwn knowing about some1 & KNOWING some1!
-This 1 distinction makes all the difference in the world!

2. Rebekah- the football fan

i. green hair, jersey, the works
ii. Knows a bunch about their QB (who knows the SEA QB?)
iii. doesn’t know him (no conversations, no time spent, not trust)
iv. She knows me though (she knows…)
-brings us back 2 that simple vs:
2 Tim 1:12
2 Timothy 1:12 ESV
12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.

C. Pray

II. BODY

2 Timothy 1:12 ESV
12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.

A. Context

a. “Paul suffered…why?

1. Paul just outlined the Gospel & his calling as a proclaimer o that Gospel

i. What’s the Gospel?

2. then says, this is why I suffer as I do.

i. suffering for telling people about the hope he has in Jesus
ii. Where is paul? prison about 2 b executed 4 telling people about Jesus
iii. He was suffering in that moment & lived a life o suffering
2 Corinthians 11:24–27 ESV
24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
2 Cor 11:24-
-This might make any1 “ashamed of the Gospel”
*i.e. question belief
*Stay silent rather than speak out
*Go back home & live a quiet, uneventful normal life
~IF

b. bringing it hm

1. What keeps a person going strong through this type o abuse?
i. the same thing that will keep u frm
-being lead away frm the truth,
-abandoning ur faith,
-Staying quiet when u should speak!
-its what 80% of teen christians lose sight of:
ii. Quick stat:
-did u know that something like 80% o teens stop going 2 church after graduation…what happens?
while in high school, they go to youth group, go on cool trips, enjoy upbeat music, even go on missions trips, but then they stop having real encounters w/God…or never had any to begin w/.
*while in high school, they go to youth group,
*go on cool trips,
*enjoy upbeat music,
*even go on missions trips,
*but then they stop having real encounters w/God…or never had any to begin w/.
then they go off to college/work & start waking up on sunday morning and say “i’m too tired this week” then say same next week, and the next…and pretty soon they havent been 4 mnths. then they only go on christmas and easter.
~ then they go off to college/work &
^ start waking up on sunday morning & say “i’m too tired this week”
^ then say same next week, & the next…
^ & pretty soon they haven’t been 4 mnths.
^ then they only go on christmas & easter.
they start asking, how come I’m not hearing frm God
~ they start asking, how come I’m not hearing frm God
then, did I ever really hear frm God?
~ then, did I ever really hear frm God?
- What keeps us frm
*Caving under pressure,
*Abandoning our faith,
*What keeps us connected to Jesus
-How do we keep ourselves frm defecting in2 secular atheism/religious complacency?
-What keeps us frm
*Caving under pressure,
*Abandoning our faith,
*What keeps us connected to Jesus
-Its more than knowing facts
-its not religious rituals
-its more than memorizing scripture,
-its more than the ability 2 debate our way through religious arguments
its not religious rituals
iii. have u ever heard the saying: its not what u know its who u know?
-Whats that mean?
*In this context, its NOT knowing the whole bible
*I know folks who could quote the bible backward & forward, goes 2 church on Sunday & lives like the devil on Monday
iv. My hope is that ur christian understanding moves beyond WHAT u learn & in2 WHO u learn.
-Say again
v. Paul knew what I hope u come 2 understand:

C. Digging in

2 Timothy 1:12 ESV
12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.
C. simple stat:

a. The #1 reason Paul proclaims the Gospel, even 2 his own parol, is his relationship w/God

believe
while in high school, they go to youth group, go on cool trips, enjoy upbeat music, even go on missions trips, but then they stop having real encounters w/God…or never had any to begin w/.

b. then says, “I am convinced”

then they go off to college/work & start waking up on sunday morning and say “i’m too tired this week” then say same next week, and the next…and pretty soon they havent been 4 mnths. then they only go on christmas and easter.
they start asking, how come I’m not hearing frm God

1. What’s it mean to be convinced?

then, did I ever really hear frm God?
i. completely certain about something:

2. What are somethings that u r convinced of?

i. sun will come out, tomorrow
ii. 2 things in life r certain: death & taxes

3. How do we become convinced of something?

i. consistency
-Paul walked w/God through life who consistently rescued him through His situations

D. How can we know God?

convinced

a. For starters, The Bible:

1. That is: God’s word

2. Paul said this of Scriptures

2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
i. That is 2 say:
: All Scripture is breathed out by God & profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, & for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
(a) That is 2 say:
- God said it (god breathed)
- it teaches us
* who God is
* what his plan is
* & how we fit in2 that plan
* That includes Godly living
~But wait, P. D. u said reading, knowing & memorizing scripture wont help…not exactly
~Reading & memorizing scripture 2 know facts WONT, but spending time w/God while u read the bible WILL
~how?
- Invite God to spend time w/u b4 u start reading (not God help me stay awake, but bring the scriptures alive; God tell me a story as I read the scriptures)
Invite God to spend time w/u b4 u start reading (not God help me stay awake, but bring the scriptures alive; God tell me a story as I read the scriptures)
*When u don’t understand, ask God to help (yep, ask God questions)
ii. The Apostle John said:
: but these are written so that you may believe (trust) that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, & that by believing you may have life in his name.
(3) Hence: he is who he says he is, not who we think he is!
b) teens,
(1) You get to know a lot about the book
(a) what happened
(b) Who’s involved
(c) how the story ends
(2) the problem is,
(a) you can get to know a lot about a person when u read a book (especially an auto-biography)
(b) but u can never get to know a person
c) Diff. btwn knowing about some1 & KNOWING some1!
(1) so, when we read our bible, we gotta ask God to step in2 our bible reading time.
* Ask God 2 b a participant with us:
~ that He’d teach & lead us
* What I mean is, God is knowable in the intimate sense, not just the read & learn about him sense.
~ “About” doesn’t cut it!
(1) I am convinced that all the knowledge of Jesus will never keep u frm falling away.
(2) KNOWING the rules will NOT keep u frm BREAKING the rules
(a) Christianity isn’t just a bunch o rules and reg’s anyway!
(b) It’s knowing, & being known
guard what’s entrusted
(3) It’s only through a relationship w/God that will keep us from being enticed away from God
~ How does God get involved w/things like bible reading & singing songs to Jesus?

b. God speaks. - BIBLE 1st cause He’s not going 2 contradict what he’s already said

-- HOW? --

1. Still sml voice

(1) He’s not like the deists who say God is distant deity who set creation in2 motion & lets it just spin out of control!
i. describe scenario of Elijah
(2) but he’s involved!
i. So, how does he speak?

2. describe scenario of Elijah

- Victory
- Running frm persecution

1 Kings 19:11–13 ESV
11 And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. 13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
- Speaks in a still sml voice- time w/the LROD in sermon prep
: & he said, “Go out & stand on the mount before the Lord.” & behold, the Lord passed by, & a great & strong wind tore the mountains & broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. & after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 & after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. & after the fire the sound of a low whisper (still small voice). 13 & when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak & went out & stood at the entrance of the cave. & behold, there came a voice to him & said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
*not audible, but more clear than that…directly to our heart
*not only in a still sml voice
Exodus 10:16–19 ESV
16 Then Pharaoh hastily called Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you. 17 Now therefore, forgive my sin, please, only this once, and plead with the Lord your God only to remove this death from me.” 18 So he went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt.
Exodus 19:16–19 ESV
16 On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. 19 And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.

(1) not only in a still sml voice
: On the morning of the 3rd day there were thunders & lightnings & a thick cloud on the mountain & a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, & they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. (2) thunderous voice!
i. God doesn’t only answer in a whisper
- Why do u think God answered Moses in the thunder?
* Maybe Isr. needed to no God isn’t a namby-pamby god!
* they needed to know God is powerful & worthy 2 b served
~ While Elijah needed to hear the compassion o a God who understands his depression
ii. Illust. thickness of God’s presence

3. God speaks the right thing, the right way, @the right time

i. God speaks 2 us based on how we need 2 hear him & what situation we r in
ii. Illust. movie: “Fairs Builer’s day off”
- How many have seen “Faris Builer’s day off” - teacher
- God doesn’t speak like this
iii. Illust. how I speak to my son
- When I just walk in the door
- When he’s doing something naughty
door
- When he’s about 2 do something dangerous
something dangerous
* now let me draw attention 2 verses that’s captivated my heart since I heard it preached a few months ago
naughty
(b) now let me draw attention 2 verses that’s captivated my heart since I heard it preached a few months ago
~ When I heard this, I thought
^ “man… this is how I want 2 know & hear frm God on a regular basis
Exodus 33:10–11 ESV
10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. 11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
: & when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up & worship, each at his tent door. (proper response when God shows up) 11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. (demonstrate) When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
