The Life Series
(ESV)
12Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
We are asking 3 questions in this series:
“Why do we want to live the way that God has instructed us to live her in Colossians?”
“How do we live this way?
“What does living this way look like?”
We have spent the last two weeks and we will today be trying to answer
“Why do we want to live the way that God has instructed us to live her in Colossians?”
(ESV)
7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
8which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight
9making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ
10as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
Week 1 we talked about:
Grace - unmerited favor or reward
What does a grace filled life look like?
We used verses from Ephesians to learn about Grace, Forgiveness, and Redemption
7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
8which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight
9making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ
10as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
(ESV)
4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8For by grace you have been saved through faith.
And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
9not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Week 2 - we asked
What is Forgiveness?
Lexham Theological Wordbook ForgivenessForgiveness is the release, on the part of the creditor or offended party, of any expectation that a debt will be repaid or that an offender will receive punishment for an offense.
When describing the removal of an inappropriate offense in this way, the removal does not condone the behavior or suggest approval for the offense.
We used more verses from Ephesians to understand why we are to forgive.
(ESV)
31Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
32Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
So from Ephesians we have God’s Grace which lead to his forgiveness, and today we are talking about that forgiveness that leads to redemption.
(ESV)
7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
So..
What does Redemption look like?
If God has given us unmerited grace AND forgiveness WHAT DO WE GET FROM IT?
Redemption
What does Redemption look like?
To understand Redemption I want us to understand two other words first:
Sacrifice and Atonement
Video
So through the Sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross to Atone for our sins we have been redeemed.
Redemption
Redemption relates to deliverance from a situation or from enemies.
Most often, this involves paying a price to “buy back” the person or thing that is being ransomed.
The word most frequently expresses the process of delivering someone from slavery or exchanging a ransom for something that belongs to God, such as a firstborn child in a family.
So lets look at some verses that hopefully will help us understand this redemption that followers of Jesus have.
(ESV)
4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
5to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
6And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba!
Father!”
7So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
(ESV)
13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
14so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
So to finish up next Sunday we are going to find out
What the Redemption that we have received because of Grace of Forgiveness should cause us to look like.
Here is preview.
(ESV)
1If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
