We are a Community
Focus on the "One Another’s" in the Bible

Tons of "one anothers" in the New Testament

Tons of "one another’s" in the New Testament. Five are found in

Five are found in

What community does to push us to become more like JC

1. We are members of one another v.5.

Romans 12:5 ESV
so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
1cor 12- body of Christ.
"We are members one of another." This is the foundational statement of all other “one another’s.”
We are organically linked together.
1cor 12- body of Christ.
1cor 12- body of Christ.
The Principle of interdependence.
Our church is not made up of independent contractors but rather is a single unit.
All of us together make up the body.
All of us together makes up the body.
I am related to you and you are related to me.
We are tied to one another.
"We are members one of another."
We are organically linked together.
You cannot be related to Jesus without being related to other Christians.
All of us possess a neediness that is appropriate and can only be fulfilled by one another.
The Principle of interdependence.
You desperately need Christians and so do I.
We express unconditional love because we know we need unconditional love--and we need that from one another.
If we get mad and leave the body- we have to ask why they were here in first place- misunderstanding of the need of the body. Unconditional love, which means forgiveness.
There is no room for arrogance among unbelievers-you and I will never make it by ourselves.
Humility that brought us to Christ remains in us if we are to be a part of the body of Christ- We all start at the same place-None of us can make it on our own-we need Christ, but we also need each other.
It takes humility to express Interdependence.
God never intended us to be “lone wolf” believers.

2. Love one another v.10a.

Romans 12:10 NASB95
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;
"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love" philos=brotherly love.
"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love" philos=brotherly love.
We are called to like one another by offering tender expressions of affection.
We are family.
All you have in life is your family in Christ.
Never talk about your sister!
We need to like those we love.
This represents a shift for me-try harder to like even the tough ones.
We press into these relationships.

3. Honor one another v.10b.

Romans 12:10 NIV
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
To honor someone means to give value, respect and consideration to one another.
To give value, respect and deference one another.
75% of church in Paul's letters were made up of slaves (employees).
We give honor and dignity to all others.
Others in our church need to feel they are valued and important.
"Gratitude is the glue of unity"—Anonymous
We don't treat others here the way we are or they are treated on the job.
Avenues of expressing honor:
words of gratitude for their service
thank you notes
taking a minute to visit
praying for each other
recognizing and acknowledging the sacrifices they make for the sake of the body

4. Live in harmony in with one another v.16.

Romans 12:16 NIV
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
Build an environment and atmosphere of cooperation.
Build an environment and atmosphere of cooperation.
Build an environment and atmosphere of cooperation.
Don't be that person who is a polarizing agent or contrarian.
A person that has so many opinions and ideas about how things have been done wrong-that it causes other to not want to hear what you have to say anymore.
When they show up, things fall apart.
Gunning for a fight.
Understand the difference between Biblical truth and preferences and opinions.
Bent to win every argument.
Our contributions should add to unity not subtract.
Be a blessing and a contributor, not a complainer.
vv.14-17 explains what "live in harmony" means.
Romans 12:14–17 NIV
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
Be quiet and listen, hold your opinions to yourself.
Be quiet and listen, hold your opinions to yourself'.
Be quiet and listen, hold your opinions to yourself'.
Do not be proud-stubborn people are prideful.
Do the honorable and noble things by taking our need for recognition off the table.
Don't let one hand know what other is doing.
Who cares who’s at fault?
Who cares who gets the credit?

5. Live in peace with one another v.18.

Romans 12:18 NIV
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
It only takes one to forgive, but two to reconcile.
It only takes one to forgive., but two to reconcile.
Be free, you are not responsible for others not willing to reconcile.
You are not responsible for managing somebody else’s happiness.
Not your job to do what only others can do.
Many want me to stop talking right here...
BUT we are responsible to make sure we have done all that we are supposed to do.
To admit our part-admit our faults.
Ask forgiveness for the part we played.
Give forgiveness for what they did to hurt us.
BUT we cannot reconcile unless they too do the same.
We must be peacemakers not peacekeepers.
Peacekeepers are codependent people pleasers.
Sacrifice the truth so everybody can be happy.
“Peacekeepers make a few people happy and everyone else feel discarded.” --Anonymous
We never sacrifice the truth for keeping people happy.
We don't sacrifice the truth to keep peace, but we do sacrifice desires and preferences for the sake of peace.
Opinion vs core truth or doctrine.
Live in harmony and peace and reconcile.

Take this with you...

"You will never be called upon to give anyone more grace than God has given you". -Max Lucado
Cannot hold on to hurts- through Jesus we now have the capacity to let go of anger and hurt and bitterness.
We have to!
Jesus told a very serious parable about forgiveness in .
Man forgiven a debt of $2 million, but does not forgive a debt of $10 by another. Given to the tormentors until debt was paid.
We will face discipline until we are willing to forgive others.
Name someone you want to honor - set a goal of accomplishing it this week.
