We don't know why God doesn't heal everyone. And yet, when God does heals someone, the impact often reverberates further than we ever anticipated. The Gospel is spread as Christ's power is witnessed. Today, in John 5, we look at a man who was afflicted for 38 years, then one day, Jesus chose to heal him. Why him? It turns out, Jesus had a plan.

                   OUTLINE STYLE: DEDUCTIVE DEVELOPMENT 

INTRODUCTION: IDEA 

1. (VIDEO) HOW I MET JESUS STORY: R. Morningstar 
2. (SLIDE 1-2) SERIES & MESSAGE INTRO 
  a) Hearing Stories, Studying John's Gospel 
  b) At first glance, we have an account of Jesus showing His mercy. 
    i) In actuality the healing of this man is but one layer to a greater story. 

TEACHING: 

3. (SLIDE 3-7) JOHN 5:1-18 
      Ø (SLIDE 8) "Invalids" & "Invalid" 
        o  John 5:3, "invalids" - "asthenountōn" (Root. astheneó) 
           • Strong's Concordance Definition: to be weak (physically: then 
             morally), feeble, sick. 
        o  John 5:5, "invalid" - "asthenia" 
           • Strong Concordance Definition: want of strength, weakness, illness, 
             suffering, calamity, frailty. 
4. (SLIDE 9) WHY DID JESUS HEAL THIS MAN? 
      Ø Answering this question reveals multiple layers... 
5. (SLIDE 10) LAYER #1: SHOWING MERCY (VS. 5-6) 
  a) 38 Years: Was he an elderly man? Had he experienced an accident? 
    Did it happen as a child or adult? Was he born this way? Did he 
    contract a debilitating illness? What did the past 38 years look like? 
  b) (SLIDE 11) Jesus heals the man! (VS. 8-9) 
6. (SLIDE 12) LAYER #2: DISRUPTING CONTROL (VS. 10 & 16) 
  a) Disrupting the religious systems of control. (Religious Leader Reminder) 
    i) They took something good (Sabbath) and used it to oppress people. 
  b) Sabbath is something good that God instituted (and still valuable). 
    i) Are the Religious leaders are working on the Sabbath? 
  c) Sometimes churches today focus on the mat, instead of celebrating! 
7. (SLIDE 13) LAYER #3: TRANSFORMING LIVES (VS. 14) 
  a) At first glance, Jesus' words sound harsh...not the case... 
  b) This man has been given a second chance at life. (Don't waste it!) 
      Ø Earthly life is momentary!

      Ø Throwback to John 1 that Jesus is God!
