How to Overcome Fear
2 Timothy 1:7
 
Introduction:
A.        We are not discussing and trying to overcome:
1.         Fear of God or reverence.
Ecclesiastes 12:13,14; Matthew 10:28; Hebrews 13:5,6
2.         Normal, healthy fears that help.
a.         Fear of fire keeps us from being burned.
b.         Fear of bodily harm reminds us to use caution.
c.         Normal fear means self protection; it does not overrule reason, it assists it.
B.        We do want to overcome:
1.
An abnormal fear that possesses a person and captures his reason.
2.         This is a destructive habit that can change blood pressure, increase the heart beat, double the breathing rate, stop digestion.
I.
FEAR IS FOE.
A.        Because it keeps us from enjoying many of the blessings that demand courage.
1.         Fear expands difficulties out of proportion.

B.        Because it is contagious.

C.        Because it keeps us from doing our duty

FRIENDS OF FEAR.
A.        Lack of knowledge.
1.
We heard a man in the house – until we turned on the lights – the air conditioner caused the floor to pop.
2.         Do-it-yourself doctoring brings disease to many.
B.        Lack of faith.

C.        Failure to keep our eyes on the goal.

III.
FIGHTING FEAR.
A.        True love for God and man. 1 John 4:18; John 14:15; 2 Timothy 1:7
B.        Let’s apply this to man’s basic fears.
1.         Fear of poverty.
Matthew 6:33; Psalm 23:1; Psalm 37:25
2.         Fear of criticism.

This fear is shown in many ways.
Hebrews 13:5,6
(1)        Style changes.
(2)        “Everybody’s doing it.”
(3)        “I might be embarrassed.”
b.         Solution.
(1)        Recognize that some criticism from certain people is a sure thing for the Christian.
(a)        Persecution. 2 Timothy 3:12; Luke 6:26; Matthew 5:10-12
(b)        Anybody who does anything that amounts to something will be criticized – “A turtle makes progress only when his neck is exposed.”
(2)        Seek the approval of God rather than men; I had rather men criticize than God.

3.         Fear of ill health.
Romans 8:28; 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
4.         Fear of death.

I love all; I hate none.
My love for some lifts my soul into the realm of the sublime.
