Introduction

This book begins with the phrase
The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. (, NKJV)
The first word מַשָּׂ֥א mashah = burden is very commonly used in the Old Testament for a pronouncement by YAHWEH by one of His prophets.[i] Thus God is seeking to proclaim to His people a very important, pressing message.
[i] See, for example, , , .

Israel Beloved by God (vs 2-5)

Why is Edom mentioned in this passage
Malachi begins very abruptly with this statement:
I have loved you”, says YAHWEH.
But the next word וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם = “but you say” is used 10 times in Malachi[i]. That is, Israel is questioning God concerning His judgments and evaluations.
Malachi 1:2–3 NKJV
“I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved; But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness.”
2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved; 3 But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness.” (, NKJV)
Why is ESAU mentioned in this connection?
But, in this book, the phrase "אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת" = “says YAHWEH of Hosts” is found 21 times. It is God’s counter to Israel’s questioning responses. Note:
4 Even though Edom has said, “We have been impoverished, But we will return and build the desolate places,” Thus says the Lord of hosts: “They may build, but I will throw down; They shall be called the Territory of Wickedness, And the people against whom the Lord will have indignation forever. (, NKJV)
This section seems to be speaking to God’s irrevocable[ii] choice of Israel to rule with the Messiah, Jesus Christ, over the earth in the future. But this includes what the New Testament calls THE SEED OF ABRAHAM and includes GENTILES as well as Jews in the Assembly of Jesus Christ. Notice how is quoted in .
Romans 9:13 NKJV
As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”
10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac 11 (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election[iii] might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12 it was said to her, “The older shall serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.” (, NKJV)
[i] See, for example, , , . This continues throughout the first 3 chapters of Malachi.
[ii] .
[iii] (the end of the book) speaks of God’s CHOICE of ISRAEL to RULE WITH JESUS CHRIST [=THE SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS].

Application for Today

But this calling includes GENTILES as well. Note Rom 9:22-26.
Romans 9:22–26 NKJV
What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory, even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? As He says also in Hosea: “I will call them My people, who were not My people, And her beloved, who was not beloved.” “And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, You are not My people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.”
22 What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? 25 As He says also in Hosea: “I will call them My people, who were not My people, And her beloved, who was not beloved.” 26 “And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.” (, NKJV)
But this fits exactly what Malachi says in the rest of this chapter. Note:

11 For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles[2]; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the Gentiles,” Says the Lord of hosts. ()

14 “But cursed be the deceiver Who has in his flock a male, And takes a vow, But sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished— For I am a great King,” Says the Lord of hosts, “And My name is to be feared among the Gentiles. ()

That is, YAHWEH will use the GENTILES to magnify His name and also REIGN WITH THEM [note King in verse 14] in the future. This certainly fits what Jesus, Himself, says in Matt 21:42-44.

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’? 43 “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. 44 And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” (, NKJV)

25 But hold fast what you have till I come. 26 And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations— 27 ‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’— as I also have received from My Father; 28 and I will give him the morning star. Revelation 2:25–28 NKJV

But this RULING is conditioned by my PERSEVERANCE TO THE END ().

But this RULING is conditioned by my PERSEVERANCE TO THE END. May God help us to “keep Christ’s works to the end”!
May God help us to “keep Christ’s works to the end”!
What is my responsibility in order to RULE WITH JESUS CHRIST?
But this RULING is conditioned by my PERSEVERANCE TO THE END. May God help us to “keep Christ’s works to the end”!
