·        12-27; David (youngest, faithfulness, why he was there, over heard Goliath)

1 Samuel 17:41-54

“Fear As Big As Goliath”

·        Meeting a State Trooper

·        Watching a scary movie

·        Dread of being chewed out

·        Waiting for results from a biopsy or blood test

·        “Fear of God”; 2 Chronicles 20:29  The fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard how the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel

We all have different types of Fear

Why were the Israelites fearful?

·        Army size?

·         Gully – deep valley between the hills

·        Spirit of God had left – 1 Sam. 16:14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.

o       Satan knows when to attack

Scene One – Enter Goliath

  • Vs 4: A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. He was over nine feet tall
  • Champion; אִישׁ־הַבֵּנַיִם – man between space                           

o       Six cubits and a Span – 9’9” tall: someone measured

o       Vs 5: He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels

o        Armor – is listed specifically 5000 shekels (97-133# breastplate) , Israelites didn’t wear much

o        Vs. 7: and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels.   Spear head (16#)

·        Vs 8: “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul?

·         Goliath was defying Israel and God 

o        Philistines knew there only chance was with Goliath

Scene Two – Enter David

·        Vs 17-22; Shows David as responsible

o       Faithful in the small things

·        Humility – 16:21 David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much…

·         David has been in Saul’s court but is doing child’s work

·        David has the Spirit of God – Vs 26: Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

Scene Three – Enter Elder Brother & Saul

·        Vs 28: Eliab burned with anger at David…

o        Very jealous

o       Eliab is older but scared

o       He would rather see Israel lose than David win

o       Imagine young boy talking to the elders of church

o       Saul is no different

o       Eliab & Saul are church killers

Scene Four – David & Goliath

Christians do not fight for victory, but from victory

·        David is YOU

·        Goliath is your FEAR

Vs. 45“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
