How often do we seek the temporary pleasures over the eternal in this life?
Paul has been arguing in his letter that the Law does not bring life Romans 8:3-4
Obedience to the Law would bring TEMPORARY blessing…
The law is not bad
The law is God’s Perfect Standard
The Promise, fulfilled in Christ Jesus, brings ETERNAL blessing!!!
Today, in our passage we are going to look at
Where We Were
Who We Are
What This Means
What Paul has been saying is simply this… God’s Law Prepared the Way for Christ!…
The Law Showed us...
Where We Were...
Prisoners of Sin!
Galatians 3:22-25
With no law given through the scriptures, without God showing us His standard…
We would proudly think we were pretty good!
(Maybe even perfect!)
Prisoners… of Sin Deuteronomy 27:26
Are under guard
Have no true freedom
the Law was our guide to Christ’ or ‘… unto the time of Christ’ Ga 3:24.
In classical times, a (TUTOR) παιδαγωγός was a man, usually a slave, whose task it was to conduct a boy to and from school and to supervise and direct his general conduct.
He was not a teacher.
(A strict enforcer / oversight / or control over one)
The Law was there to show God’s people the general conduct in which they would live their lives until a certain time would come
At this appointed time Christ would fulfill this law and send His Spirit… We would then walk life IN THE SPIRIT and NOT under the law.
Consider what Paul says: “faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”
If not under a tutor… what now?
Galatians 3:26-4:6
Who We Are...
Children of God! Look at Verse 26… through Christ not law/works
Law prepared us to receive the promise of Salvation… (by the way, this is far greater than just fire insurance)
We are talking about a whole new identity...
No longer a prisoner / slave to sin
We are His child!
NOT His slave (changing owners)
NOT His servant (to do His bidding and dirty work)
NOT a peasant in His kingdom or a noble in His courts...
We are His children, fellow heirs with Christ!
Note several things in these verses…
Verse 27 - clothed in Christ… 4:1-3 explains a custom very common to the people under Jewish and Roman custom:
Though he was heir someday when he was a boy he was as a slave
the guardian was there to protect them until the right time
as was the law to protect until God’s son would come and give His Spirit
when a youth came of age he was given a special toga which admitted him to the full rights of the family and state and indicated he was a grown-up son.
So the Galatian believers had laid aside the old garments of the Law and had put on Christ’s robe of righteousness which grants full acceptance before God.
Who would want to put on the old clothing again?
Why live in that state!?
Verses 28 & 29 - have been confused and taken out of context so many times...
There is none more spiritually superior over another
a believing Jew is not more privileged before God than a believing Gentile
a believing slave does not rank higher than a believing free person
a believing man is not superior to a believing woman
a believing pastor is not superior to any other believer!
Some Jewish men prayed, “I thank God that You have not made me a Gentile, a slave, or a woman.”
That being said, scripture is clear that God has established Roles, Responsibilities, and Authority in His church, this world and in the Family.
What Paul is speaking of here is that all share in this promised blessing equally...
There is also the spiritual seed of Abraham who are not Jews.
These are the Gentiles who believe and become Abraham’s spiritual seed.
They inherit the promise of justification by faith
But… to suggest, that Gentile believers inherit the national promises given to the believing Jewish remnant or that the church is the “new Israel”—is to read into these verses what is not there.
We are heirs of the promise of faith!
How did this transition from slaves / prisoners to heir/child happen???
Verses 4-6 - “But... God” this was a divine work of God!
In His time!!!
In His Way!!!
Under His Law...
He REDEEMED us… to pay a price to cause the release or freedom of someone by a means which proves costly to the individual causing the release.
Payment was given… not to Satan
God’s righteous standard required perfection
Sin required blood sacrifice / death Romans 6:23
We were not imprisoned to sin because we were innocent!
We were guilty as charged!
Do you see the Trinity at work in our salvation?
God doing all as He desires
His Son Redeeming us, paying the price
His Spirit coming and sealing us as His
We were adopted… brought in to His family.
Under Roman law, a son could be disowned from a family for several reasons BUT
A son who was chosen, adopted into a family could never be disowned because of the choice made
We don’t call upon God as Master, or King, but we approach Him as Abba Father.
Intimacy
Relationship
What This Means...
Don’t desire to go back!
Galatians 4:7-9
Because of our Faith in Christ we are no longer slaves!
Why go back?
Weak we cannot be perfect, we stubble in the flesh
why try to set standards and laws to build your pride admit you’re weak
Worthless it does no good anyway.
Why try to live in the flesh walk in the Spirit He has given you!
why try to please God in your flesh (you can’t) walk in His Spirit
Why seek the basic temporary things of this world when God is offering so much more?
to say you need to earn His mercy would negate it being mercy, to say you need to pay and deserve His Grace ceases to be grace
Why would one who has been made free desire to go back into harsh slavery
He has brought you into His family.
Let’s start living as the Family of God.
Enjoy all the benefits of being a part of His family
