Are you ready for eternal journey?

As our series: The Sum of all things: Jesus continues we will go into a few more sermons about the Gospel, the Growing and the Going. So today it is a good old gospel message.
To those who are Christians, a reminder and and encouragement
To those who are not sure, a clear path to salvation and eternal life in Christ.
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
For there is no other way except through Jesus
Acts 4:12 NASB95
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
If you died today, do you know for certain that you would be with God?
Scripture tells us we can know
1 John 5:13 NASB95
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
If you died and you went to the gates of heaven as the world often says, and Jesus asks you “why should I let you in” what would your answer be?
I’m a good person
I go to church and tithe
I have good morals and I keep the 10 Commandments
I help others
Key there is “I” and I cannot get into heaven by my works, I can only get into heaven by His works. I cannot earn my way, buy my way, talk my way into heaven.
Eternal life is a gift; not earned and not deserved, but freely given
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So why is the gift so important? We need to understand the gift, and our need for the gift. We have a problem, God has the solution and offered the solution as His perfect and acceptable sacrifice

I. Need for gift of grace

The problem is sin, and the Bible teaches us that all have sinned and sin is a violation of God’s law
1 John 3:4 NASB95
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
Sin is failing to do the right thing, when you know the right thing to do.
James 4:17 NASB95
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
And all have sinned
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
So if we all fall short, what are the consequences of falling short?
Death
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What kind of death you may ask, eternal death and separation from God
Revelation 21:8 NASB95
8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Eternal death, even if violated God’s law just a little
James 2:10–11 NASB95
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. 11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
But there is hope, remember I told you God has a solution to our problem, our sin problem, and the solution is grace

II. Gods Grace is the solution

In God’s mercy eternal life is offered
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
His mercy is made available by His sacrifice of His Son
Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
God’s perfect sacrifice for our problem, for our sins
1 John 4:9–10 NASB95
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
On the cross He paid the price, by His death our salvation, our eternal life was made possible. This gift, this sacrifice is available to all, in fact that would be Gods will
2 Peter 3:9 NASB95
9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Still not many receive this free gift
Because they fail to look for it, though it be made evident
Matthew 7:13–14 NASB95
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Because they fail to obey the command to do the Father’s will
Matthew 7:21–23 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
Or you may say Jesus saves, you may even do things in the name of Jesus, but the one who does the will of the Father will be saved.
1 John 2:15–16 NASB95
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
1Jn2:17
1 John 2:17 NASB95
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
Eternal life is in the will of the Father, so do the fathers will that you might receive the gift of grace.

III. Receiving the Gift of Grace

First you have to hear the message that can bring faith
Romans 10:17 NASB95
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
So faith is believing, believing in Jesus, the one that God the Father has sent
John 6:28–29 NASB95
28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
John 6:40 NASB95
40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
Faith is shown in works, works not producing faith but from faith, for faith without works is a dead faith
James 2:26 NASB95
26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
So if you have faith, how can you express your faith in Christ Jesus?
By repenting of your sins, in fact it is required, and required by Jesus. So if those who do the will of God are those who can be saved, repentance is one of those things.
Luke 13:3 NASB95
3 “I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
Luke 24:46–47 NASB95
46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
A change of mind, a change of direction and that leads to a change of destination and a change of heart.
2 Corinthians 7:9–10 NASB95
9 I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. 10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
2 Corinthians 7:11 NASB95
11 For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter.
2Cor7:11
Another thing that is the will of God and a work that is from faith is confessing your faith in Jesus
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Confessing is knowing and acknowledging Jesus
Acts 8:37 NASB95
37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
When we do this, Jesus will confess us before the Father
Matthew 10:32–33 NASB95
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
Another work from faith is baptism that is the point of salvation, this is the place that God does His work in you, on you and then from there forward through you.
We receive Christ in baptism, there are some spiritual truths to know as we go
First, all spiritual blessings are found “in” Christ
Ephesians 1:3 NASB95
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
Salvation is found “in” Christ
2 Timothy 2:10 NASB95
10 For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.
And there in no condemnation “in” Christ
Romans 8:1 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
and eternal life, which is what we started with today is in Christ
1 John 5:13 NASB95
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
1 John 5:11 NASB95
11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
Believing in Jesus is good, but you need to get into Jesus for eternal life, another way to put it, is how do you put on Jesus?
In baptism
Galatians 3:26–27 NASB95
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Romans 13:14 NASB95
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
So you have heard people say that we are not saved by works and baptism is a work so that cant be the free gift of grace if we have to do it. Remember that we are coming from faith so God can do the work and it is at baptism where God does it.Removes your sins and makes you new. So let me expand just for a couple of minutes on baptism
It is immersion in water (for the believer)
Acts 8:35–36 NASB95
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him. 36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
Acts 8:37–38 NASB95
37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him.
to the one who knows he is a sinner and repents
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
It is the place where we are baptized into Jesus death
Romans 6:3 NASB95
3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
It is the place where we are buried into His death and raised into life
Romans 6:4a NASB95
4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
life with a purpose to walk in it, to walk by faith, to walk in obedience, to walk in the light
God’s work, by God’s hand that is in cooperation with our faith
Colossians 2:11–12 NASB95
11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
Colossians 2:13 NASB95
13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
Look at that baptism is a work, but not our work, it is God’s work (v.12)
Titus 3:5–7 NASB95
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Not by our righteousness, but by His mercy; we then have that, can know that we have that hope of eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Savior.
So from salvation, the point of salvation, from baptism we then walk in the newness of life and do as Jesus says.
John 14:15 NASB95
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
From baptism we learn to follow Him and do His will and to keep His commands
Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
and we can know what we have waiting for us
Revelation 2:10 NASB95
10 ‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Though it may not be easy, though it could be costly to be a Christian at times at the end, He has that crown of life for us! He has the heavenly home the Father prepared for us.
John 14:1 NASB95
1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.
John 14:2 NASB95
2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
(Lead to invitation)
The way is the cross
The place is the church
The result is eternal life in Him in Heaven
If you have not responded to the gospel message yet, or maybe thought you did before and find you had not and need to now.
Acts 22:16 NASB95
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
