As Alpha and Omega, He is the Beginning and the End, and the First and the Last
This Part
Who is the Son of Man?
Why is Jesus identified as Son of Man in the last days?

Main Points

The Three (3) Sonships of Jesus Christ

Son of Man, Son of God, Son of David

The Most Common View

[SEE ILLUSTRATION]
The 3 sonships are confined to specific time one after the other
The 3 sonships speak of 3 specific ministries
Jesus was Son of Man when He was on earth
Jesus is Son of God in the Church Ages
Jesus will be Son of David in the Millennium
the only exception is the son of man ministry in the end-time.

Our Improved View

[SEE ILLUSTRATION]
Son of God
it is not a ministry, but a divine title of Christ identifying His origin and nature
He came from God
He is God
In the beginning, it was the Logos, the Visible part of the Invisible Eternal Spirit
In the incarnation, He was Jesus Christ, the human form
In post-resurrection, He is Jesus Christ back in Logos form, expressing the fullness of the Invisible Eternal Spirit
Son of David
it is not a ministry, but a title of Christ identifying Him to the lineage of David.
Jesus acknowledged this title as belonging to Him
Matthew 20:30–32 NKJV
And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!” Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!” So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
Matthew 21:9–11 NKJV
Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!” And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Matthew 22:41–46 NKJV
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.” He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’? If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.
Matthew 22.41-
Jesus is Son of David because He is heir to the throne of David
Son of Man
this title identifies Christ as a prophet (WMB)
this title is connected to a unique work or ministry of the Son of God
this title applies to a broader time in history
beginning with his earthly ministry
ending in judgment day
this title identifies Christ to a specific prophecy in Scripture

The Son of Man

The Prophecy concerning the Son of Man

Two O.T. prophecies speak of the coming Son of Man:
1.) Psalm 8.3-6
Psalm 8:3–6 NKJV
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,
Psalm 8.3-6
it is a dual prophecy
the first prophecy speaks of humans who were given authority over earth creatures
the second prophecy speaks of Christ the Son of Man, destined to rule over all things
Hebrews 2:5–9 NKJV
For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands. You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
Hebrews 2.5-9
Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, will one day rule over all the works of God
2.) Daniel 7.9-14
Daniel 8:9–14 NKJV
And out of one of them came a little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land. And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered. Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who was speaking, “How long will the vision be, concerning the daily sacrifices and the transgression of desolation, the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?” And he said to me, “For two thousand three hundred days; then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.”
Daniel 8.9-14
Daniel 7:9–14 NKJV
“I watched till thrones were put in place, And the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, And the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, Its wheels a burning fire; A fiery stream issued And came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, And the books were opened. “I watched then because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking; I watched till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame. As for the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. “I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.
Daniel 7.9-14
the Ancient of Days is the Great Eternal Spirit, the LORD
the setting of the vision is judgment day
the Son of Man is seen coming with the clouds of heaven
the Son of Man comes to receive dominion, glory and a kingdom
the Son of Man will rule over peoples, nations and languages

The Son of Man in the past

Made lower than the angels

Matthew 17:12 NKJV
But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.”
Matthew 17:22 NKJV

Matthew 17:22–23 NKJV
Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up.” And they were exceedingly sorrowful.
Matthew 18:11 NKJV
For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.
Matthew 20:28 NKJV
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Matthew 26:24 NKJV
The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
John 3:14 NKJV
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
The Son of Man ministry on earth was appointed to minister deliverance through death.
But while on still on earth, Jesus pointed to His future works as Son of Man
Matthew 26:63 NKJV
But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
Matthew 26:63–64 NKJV
But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this. The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.

His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.
