(NRSV)
A New Prophet Like Moses
15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet.
During this time of our history false prophets or heathen soothsayers.
Just a few weeks ago I spoke to you about my visions and dreams and in this passage we look at that.
“like unto me,” The passage is telling us that God speaks to us through dreams but that He is raising up a prophet like Moses.
Not that it is only one but that Prophets like Moses that He speaks to face to face.
heathen soothsayers
God tells us that He will put the words in the Prophets mouth,Deuteronomy 18:18 (NRSV)
18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command.
I invite you to think for a moment about what God is doing and reflect on what God did.
At Sinai God spoke face to face with the people (through fire) and the people called it a mortal event.
We call these the Ten Commandments.
God Commanded these things and it so scared the people that they asked that God never speak to them again.
So I ask you to imagine for a minute that a Prophet has to be someone willing to listen to an all mighty god; a terrifying event at best.
So imagine that you must listen to this voice asking you to take the words put in your mouth and tell them to his people.
God is telling us to listen to his appointed ones, (NRSV)
19 Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable.
But rest easy those of you who want to blame the Prophet, (NRSV)
20 But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak—that prophet shall die.”
21 You may say to yourself, “How can we recognize a word that the Lord has not spoken?”
22 If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the Lord has not spoken.
The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be frightened by it.
