2 Corinthians 1:3 GW

Compassion :To be full of eager yearning.

Compassion=the drive brought about by mercy - hesed —agape

1. Mercy is over all his works

A. Good will toward all men

B. Jesus came as mercy and comfort

II. Compassion directed Jesus’s work.

A. Because of compassion Jesus called the twelve (, , .

Matthew 9:36 KJV 1900
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Matthew 10:1 GW
Jesus called his twelve disciples and gave them authority to force evil spirits out of people and to cure every disease and sickness.
Matthew 10:5–8 GW
Jesus sent these twelve out with the following instructions: “Don’t go among people who are not Jewish or into any Samaritan city. Instead, go to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel. As you go, spread this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ Cure the sick, bring the dead back to life, cleanse those with skin diseases, and force demons out of people. Give these things without charging, since you received them without paying.

B. Compassion was a higher priority than anything else (,

Matthew 14:1–36 GW
At that time Herod, ruler of Galilee, heard the news about Jesus. He said to his officials, “This is John the Baptizer! He has come back to life. That’s why he has the power to perform these miracles.” Herod had arrested John, tied him up, and put him in prison. Herod did this for Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. John had been telling Herod, “It’s not right for you to be married to her.” So Herod wanted to kill John. However, he was afraid of the people because they thought John was a prophet. When Herod celebrated his birthday, Herodias’ daughter danced for his guests. Herod was so delighted with her that he swore he would give her anything she wanted. Urged by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.” The king regretted his promise. But because of his oath and his guests, he ordered that her wish be granted. He had John’s head cut off in prison. So the head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. John’s disciples came for the body and buried it. Then they went to tell Jesus. When Jesus heard about John, he left in a boat and went to a place where he could be alone. The crowds heard about this and followed him on foot from the cities. When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He felt sorry for them and cured their sick people. In the evening the disciples came to him. They said, “No one lives around here, and it’s already late. Send the crowds to the villages to buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.” They told him, “All we have here are five loaves of bread and two fish.” Jesus said, “Bring them to me.” Then he ordered the people to sit down on the grass. After he took the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed the food. He broke the loaves apart, gave them to the disciples, and they gave them to the people. All of them ate as much as they wanted. When they picked up the leftover pieces, they filled twelve baskets. About five thousand men had eaten. (This number does not include the women and children who had eaten.) Jesus quickly made his disciples get into a boat and cross to the other side ahead of him while he sent the people away. After sending the people away, he went up a mountain to pray by himself. When evening came, he was there alone. The boat, now hundreds of yards from shore, was being thrown around by the waves because it was going against the wind. Between three and six o’clock in the morning, he came to them. He was walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. They said, “It’s a ghost!” and began to scream because they were afraid. Immediately, Jesus said, “Calm down! It’s me. Don’t be afraid!” Peter answered, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said, “Come!” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he noticed how strong the wind was, he became afraid and started to sink. He shouted, “Lord, save me!” Immediately, Jesus reached out, caught hold of him, and said, “You have so little faith! Why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind stopped blowing. The men in the boat bowed down in front of Jesus and said, “You are truly the Son of God.” They crossed the sea and landed at Gennesaret. The men there recognized Jesus and sent messengers all around the countryside. The people brought him everyone who was sick. They begged him to let them touch just the edge of his clothes. Everyone who touched his clothes was made well.

III. Look at the compassion of Jesus

A. ,

Matthew 20:30–34 GW
Two blind men were sitting by the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” The crowd told them to be quiet. But they shouted even louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. They told him, “Lord, we want you to give us our eyesight back.” Jesus felt sorry for them, so he touched their eyes. Their sight was restored at once, and they followed him.

B. ,

Mark 1:40–41 GW
Then a man with a serious skin disease came to him. The man fell to his knees and begged Jesus, “If you’re willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus felt sorry for him, reached out, touched him, and said, “I’m willing. So be clean!”

C. , He saw their faith, not the wrecking of his roof.

Mark 2:1–5 GW
Several days later Jesus came back to Capernaum. The report went out that he was home. Many people had gathered. There was no room left, even in front of the door. Jesus was speaking ⌊God’s⌋ word to them. Four men came to him carrying a paralyzed man. Since they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof over the place where Jesus was. Then they lowered the cot on which the paralyzed man was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”

D. , Compassion drove Him into the tombs- place of the insane.

Mark 5:2–19 GW
As Jesus stepped out of the boat, a man came out of the tombs and met him. The man was controlled by an evil spirit and lived among the tombs. No one could restrain him any longer, not even with a chain. He had often been chained hand and foot. However, he snapped the chains off his hands and broke the chains from his feet. No one could control him. Night and day he was among the tombs and on the mountainsides screaming and cutting himself with stones. The man saw Jesus at a distance. So he ran ⌊to Jesus⌋, bowed down in front of him, and shouted, “Why are you bothering me now, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me.” He shouted this because Jesus said, “You evil spirit, come out of the man.” Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He told Jesus, “My name is Legion [Six Thousand], because there are many of us.” He begged Jesus not to send them out of the territory. A large herd of pigs was feeding on a mountainside nearby. The demons begged him, “Send us into the pigs! Let us enter them!” Jesus let them do this. The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand pigs rushed down the cliff into the sea and drowned. Those who took care of the pigs ran away. In the city and countryside they reported everything that had happened. So the people came to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. The man was sitting there dressed and in his right mind. The people were frightened. Those who saw this told what had happened to the demon-possessed man and the pigs. Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their territory. As Jesus stepped into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him, “Let me stay with you.” But Jesus would not allow it. Instead, he told the man, “Go home to your family, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been to you.”

However, when God our Savior made his kindness and love for humanity appear, he saved us, but not because of anything we had done to gain his approval. Instead, because of his mercy he saved us through the washing in which the Holy Spirit gives us new birth and renewal.

VI. Jesus fulfills , to get to mercy

2 Corinthians 1:3 GW
Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He is the Father who is compassionate and the God who gives comfort.

A. Therefore death has no more taste left for us (,

Hebrews 2:9–18 GW
Jesus was made a little lower than the angels, but we see him crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death. Through God’s kindnesshe died on behalf of everyone. God is the one for whom and through whom everything exists. Therefore, while God was bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was the right time to bring Jesus, the source of their salvation, to the end of his work through suffering. Jesus, who makes people holy, and all those who are made holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus isn’t ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says, “I will tell my people about your name. I will praise you within the congregation.” In addition, Jesus says, “I will trust him.” And Jesus says, “I am here with the sons and daughters God has given me.” Since all of these sons and daughters have flesh and blood, Jesus took on flesh and blood to be like them. He did this so that by dying he would destroy the one who had power over death (that is, the devil). In this way he would free those who were slaves all their lives because they were afraid of dying. So Jesus helps Abraham’s descendants rather than helping angels. Therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters so that he could be merciful. He became like them so that he could serve as a faithful chief priest in God’s presence and make peace with God for their sins. Because Jesus experienced temptation when he suffered, he is able to help others when they are tempted.

B. No More fear of death!

1. ,

1 John 3:16–17 GW
We understand what love is when we realize that Christ gave his life for us. That means we must give our lives for other believers. Now, suppose a person has enough to live on and notices another believer in need. How can God’s love be in that person if he doesn’t bother to help the other believer?

2. ,

1 John 4:15–18 GW
God lives in those who declare that Jesus is the Son of God, and they live in God. We have known and believed that God loves us. God is love. Those who live in God’s love live in God, and God lives in them. God’s love has reached its goal in us. So we look ahead with confidence to the day of judgment. While we are in this world, we are exactly like him ⌊with regard to love⌋. No fear exists where his love is. Rather, perfect love gets rid of fear, because fear involves punishment. The person who lives in fear doesn’t have perfect love.
