Jesus faced every temptation that we will ever face, and yet was without sin. Jesus proved to be the kind of man and son who was faithful, trusting in His Father's goodness and in His word. Vv.1-2: Setting the Stage

Immediate Context: The testing of Jesus takes place directly after his baptism and confirmation as God’s son (Matt. 3:13-17)
Broader Context: Jesus as true Israel and the continuation and fulfillment of the OT story
Led By the Spirit: Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness for the divine purpose of being tempted by the devil.
God is Sovereign over our trials
Being the son of God doesn’t exempt Jesus from human physical needs
Being God incarnate does not exempt Jesus from spiritual disciplines like praying and fasting

Vv. 3-4: First Temptation: Turn Stones into Bread

Obedience and piety are no absolute shield from trials or temptations
The real question: “What kind of son Jesus was going to prove himself to be?”
Jesus’ Response: He quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 and in doing so evidences that he saw his hunger as God’s will for his life at that time and it was not to be avoided for self-indulgence.

Vv. 5-7: Second Temptation: Jump off the Temple

Satan Quotes Psalm 91:11-12
The Bible can be used diabolically
Satan knows the words of God, but he does not know and trust the God of the word
Jesus’ Response: He Quotes Deuteronomy 6:16

Vv.8-10: Third Temptation: Worship Satan

Satan’s offer is legitimate
It is absolutely a good end that Satan offers, but it is through the wrong means.
Jesus knows the true son cannot compromise his loyalty to the Father
What’s really at stake here? : EVERYTHING!!
Jesus is in Control: Commands Satan to leave and quotes Deuteronomy 6:13
V. 11: Outcome of the Temptation
Jesus perfectly obeyed the will of the Father
God’s messengers break the fast, that Jesus himself would not break.
Jesus is our model for fighting temptation
Jesus is qualified to be our savior, high priest , and king
