Introduction
We’ve lost our way in many areas of life in the world today.
Because we don’t know our history, we’ve strayed radically from the path that we should be following in many areas.
There are institutions today that bear no resemblance today to the intent of their creation.
Noah Webster started the first public school in order to make sure that every child had the ability to read the Bible for themselves.
In the early days schools used the Bible as one of the books for teaching children to read.
“Education is useless without the Bible.
The Bible was America's basic text book in all fields.
God's Word, contained in the Bible, has furnished all necessary rules to direct our conduct.”
Noah Webster
“Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well, the main end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life” Harvard University 1642
I submit to you that his statement was born from a severe lack of understanding of history.
The founders didn’t address what the government should for the people because they didn’t intend for it to do anything for the people.
Education is just one example of our slide as a nation and as a people of faith.
I want us to take a step back this morning and take a look at the big picture.
We need to look at where we are, evaluate whether that’s where we’re supposed to be and, then set a direction for the new year.
I’m going to speak in generalities this morning a lot of the time.
When I talk about us or you, I’m not talking about CrossPoint church or you as individuals, but I’m speaking about people or things on the whole.
Context
Jesus has been telling His disciples about the blessings that they enjoy and some of the evidences of being true disciple of Christ.
Now He’s going to show them some of the responsibilities that go along with those blessings.
Scripture
Matthew 5:13-
Verse 13
The Emphatic You
Jesus is speaking here to His followers, to His disciples.
“You”, He says.
He’s emphasizing that it’s them, in particular
The Exclusive You
He’s not talking about people in general.
He’s not talking about someone who is doing a remarkable kindness for their community on a regular basis.
