Are You Lonely Tonight

How did God make us to be?
Genesis 2:18 ESV
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Genesis 2:
Genesis 2:18 ESV
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
genesis 2:18
Why would God think it is not ok to be alone?
We are made incomplete
We need others in our life
Who we are is influenced by others
Unlike God, we fit with others like a puzzle piece, making each other more than we are by ourselves

We always have friends around, how can I be lonely?
Do people want to know who you are?
Are they interested in your life?
Do they help when you are in trouble?
Can you trust them?
How do we feel when we are lonely?

• feeling alone and confused

• feeling “weird” and different from others

• feeling abandoned by God and denied a normal lifestyle

• feeling rejected by family and condemned by the church and society

Jesus knows what loneliness is about
He was alone
He was weird and different from others
He was rejected by family and condemned by the religious and society
He felt abandoned by God
What are we supposed to do with these feelings?

4 I look for someone to come and help me,

but no one gives me a passing thought!

No one will help me;

no one cares a bit what happens to me.

5 Then I pray to you, O LORD.

I say, “You are my place of refuge.

You are all I really want in life.

Psalm 142 ESV
A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. With my voice I cry out to the Lord; with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord. I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him. When my spirit faints within me, you know my way! In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me. Look to the right and see: there is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for my soul. I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low! Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me! Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name! The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.
God cares what happens to YOU
God knows who YOU are
God wants to have a relationship with YOU
God wants YOU to be more than YOU are now
God does not betray YOU
God gives YOU a safe place to rest, to be YOU, to be the better YOU, the one that you are afraid to show anyone else
