each of the 4 gospels give an account of the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus
because each of the accounts were written by different men from different perspectives they are not identical
this is especially true of the gospel of John
where Matthew, Mark and Luke are very similar in their content, John is markedly different
that is especially true of his coverage of the last week of Jesus’ life
where Matthew, Mark and Luke devote approximately 2 chapters John devotes 9
this is not surprising given the fact that John appears to have been Jesus’ closest friend
John therefore devotes almost half of his gospel to Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples , His suffering, His death and His resurrection
John 13-17 an extended account of what Jesus’ conversation with His disciples at the Last Supper
much of this account is unique to John’s gospel
begins with an amazing expression of Jesus’ love in 13:1
the whole purpose in His coming to earth as a man is about to be fulfilled
He will go to his cross to suffer and die in the place of all whom God had given to him
knowing that He was about to leave His disciples and that they would be heartbroken, John says “he loved them to the end”
depending on the context could have any of 3 meanings:
loved with all of His love
loved for all their earthly lives
loved for all of eternity
He demonstrated that wonderful love by washing their feet even though they had been arguing about who among them was the greatest
would demonstrate humility and love by taking upon Himself the wrath of God which should have fallen on them
after His death and resurrection Jesus would continue to demonstrate His love by praying without ceasing for them
chs 14-16: Jesus expressed his love with many comforts, reminders and promises
then in ch 17 John recorded Jesus’ High Priestly prayer for His disciples
this brings us to John 14
Jesus about to go to the cross, suffer and die, be raised from the dead and ascend to the right had of God
he was going to a place where they could not immediately follow
they had gone everywhere with him for 3 yrs
Jesus also told them that Peter would deny him not once, but 3x
if Peter, the leader and their rock will waiver and fall what about them?
they were troubled, distraught, confused, frustrated, afraid
having expressed his deep love for them in the washing of their feet he told them:
“let not your hearts be troubled” = stop being troubled
how to stop being troubled:
believe in God = remember what God has said and done throughout the OT and rest in the fact that Jesus is the same
the antidote to fear and anxiety is faith in God, in who He is, what He has done and what he has promised and believing that the Lord Jesus is just like Him
A Second Reason Not to be Troubled
the first: believe in God, believe also in me
know God, know his faithfulness and long-suffering nature in dealing with his people, slow to anger, abounding in compassion and steadfast love
Jesus and the Father are one and the same
whatever comfort and strength you derive from your covenant keeping God find in me
the second: “I go to prepare a place for you”
KJV: “In my father’s house are many mansions”
all of the newer translations more correctly translate “mansions” as “rooms”
when a son was ready for marriage his father would choose a bride for him
ex. of Rebecca chosen for Isaac
during the engagement period the father and the son would begin construction of a room with the expectation that after the marriage the son and his wife would move into that room and take up residence in the father’s house
Jesus told his disciples that they were not to be troubled by their not being able to follow him because his reason for leaving them was to go and prepare a room for them when they were finally able to join him
he was going ahead of them to make places for them in his Father’s house
by using this metaphor of betrothal, marriage and taking up residence in the father’s home, Jesus was giving his disciples a strong and wonderful consolation
They had been betrothed to Jesus by the Father
though he would go away it was only for a time
the goal: reunited in the Father’s house
Jesus’ ultimate purpose in preparing rooms:
to return for them that they might be united together forever
mansions vs rooms:
Jesus wants close intimate fellowship not disconnected palaces where each person lives by themselves
response of the disciples John 14:5-7
Jesus told them that though they could not immediately follow him the way to him was not unknown, not a mystery
Thomas’ answer in v.5
“Lord, we do not know where you are going.
How can we know the way?”
though Jesus had told them a number of times that he was heading for the cross they were not able to comprehend because of their preconceived ideas about Messiah
the reality that the way to the Father was through Jesus’ perfect life, death and resurrection was foreign to them

the way to the Father’s house where rooms will be waiting for them is through the Lord Jesus
the only way to the Father is through the Lord Jesus Christ
who is this Jesus?
He is the way, He is the truth and He is the life

why is it important that Jesus be the truth as the way to the Father?
if he is not the truth we can have no confidence that he is in fact the way
the life
as “the way” Jesus is also “the life”, that is, eternal life
Jesus to the woman at the well in John 4
he is eternal life therefore to have Jesus is to never die
Jesus’ Desire For Us
Jesus is the bridegroom and we the church are his bride
God has chosen the bride for his son
every born again believer has been set apart from the world by God and He has given them to His Son, the Lord Jesus
even now Jesus is preparing rooms for us
Jesus’ desire is to be with his people
a day is coming when all believers will be reunited with Christ at the marriage supper of the Lamb
Lord’s Table prefigures this great and glorious day
when God’s people gather around the table we do so in anticipation of that great day when every born again believer will be united with Christ, never to be separated from him again
we will celebrate that beginning with a great feast
