Turn to 1 Timothy 3:14-15
1 Timothy is a letter from Paul to Timothy and it is full of great guidance and truth for leaders of the church (pastors and deacons) and for the church itself (God’s children.)
To give a quick overview of what is going on here is that Paul has discovered that leaders in the Ephesian church have distorted the true message they had first heard from Paul himself.
The Ephesian church (the Ephesian body of believers) were twisting around Jewish practices and were borrowing some ways of the world.
Hmmm?
They were also tolerating immoral behavior.
This must stop!
You and I know what immoral behavior is.
I’m not talking about those who don’t know Christ.
I’m calling out the body of believers.
Stop living in sin!
Pastor you are being judgmental and isn’t that a sin?
What is a sin is that I allow or look the other way and pretend that sin isn’t a sin.
You call yourself a Christian?
Then act like it!
Paul is instructing Timothy how the church should be behaving and tells him to straightened them out before he gets there and it really gets interesting.
I’m calling you to get it straightened out now before someone returns for His bride and it will eternally worse than what Paul would ever do if he were to show up.
1 Timothy 3:14
Understand the urgency from Paul here is vs. 14.
Paul is bringing the truth.
He understands though that if he is delayed that the message must not be delayed.
So he sends it ahead, just in case.
vs. 15
We are...
God’s Household
How we ought to conduct ourselves in God’s household.
I believe in the church building we should be respectful.
We shouldn’t be running around.
We should not be playing on our phones, sleeping, shooting spitballs.
Outside of scripture I can not tell you what proper behavior for church is but I can tell you that this is NOT what Paul is talking about.
What Paul is talking about is how we as the church must behave as the church.
We are the church!
We are family!
What defines family?
In families we are related to one another by blood.
We are bought by the blood of Christ.
We are blood relatives.
Act like it!
Do you see yourself as related to these people sitting all around you?
You are!
Pillar and foundation of truth
What does a pillar do?
It holds something up.
We are to hold up the truth.
If we, the family of God do not represent the truth, the church has no foundation, no prop, and it cannot hold up the truth of God.
“The church is composed of people redeemed by the Son of God, brought together by the will of God to live together as the family of God, in order to do the work of God, in the power of the Spirit of God, all for the glory of God.” Pastor J. David Hoke
A family does everything in it’s power to save the life of a loved one!
I’ve heard it said many times that “a family that prays together, stays together.”
