Why Bible Study Matters
I’m a visual person, and so seeing something helps me understand it.
You can’t tell me about it, I have to experience it with my eyes.
So I need some volunteers to help me show you ways the Word of God is illustrated in scripture:
The Bible Describes the Word of God:
Sword
The Bible Describes the Word of God as a
Sword -
Food - (cheeseburger)
, ,
Treasure - (gold watch, etc.)
,
Seed - (seeds for a garden - Joe Hedgpeth?)
Hammer - Hammer (Bubba Sandifer if here)
So why read the scripture?
Well, because the Word of God is the heart dividing, soul nourishing, life giving,
So why read the scripture?
Well, because the Word of God is the heart dividing, soul nourishing, life giving, fire that breaks our hearts into pieces and puts it back together again by his grace.
So why read the scripture?
Well, because the Word of God is the heart dividing, soul nourishing, life giving, fire that breaks our hearts into pieces and puts it back together again by his grace.
The word of God is indeed our treasure!
So how should we read it?
Open It
The first step in growing in our understanding of God’s Word is to open God’s Word.
If you don’t open the Word of God it is like that delicious Baconator from Wendy’s sitting in its wrapper.
It’s delicious.
It’s juicy.
And it’s worthless to you until you open the wrapper and sink your teeth into the moist bread and juicy bacon and warm cheese and I’m making myself hungry!
It’s the same with God’s Word.
In the pages of scripture are God’s plans for you, his blessings for you, his promises to you, his love for you, and you cannot experience it until you press into him by seeking him in his Word.
So how do we press into God, how do we draw near to him?
Well, in , Israel is criticized because
We must be daily drawing near to God.
James
And we draw near to him in His Word.
So how do we read it?
Well, I suggest you take a chapter of the Bible and read it each day.
If that seems too much, take a devotional and read the chapter the verse the devotional is teaching about and read that.
I’m amazed at how often we read a devotional without reading the text it refers to.
If you are going to use a devotional, at least read the text and think about it before you immediately jump into what the author has to say about the text.
The commentary about the Word of God by the author is not the Word of God.
Nothing can replace reading, cherishing and feeding upon the Word of God.
Question It
After you read the text, the next thing you want to do it ask questions about the text.
I remember when I was a senior in high school going to Kristy’s house to ask her dad’s permission to take her to our all night after Prom lock-in at the bowling alley in Pearl.
Our school, in an attempt to keep us safe after prom would rent the bowling alley and we would play all night.
I remember sitting in Kristy’s living room as her dad asked me question after question.
“Where are you going?”
Who will be there chaperoning?
What time will it be over?
What time will you have my daughter home?
And then I got a good look at his double-barrel shotgun and a reminder of how important his daughter is to him.
Because his daughter was important to him, he questioned me.
God’s Word is important, we should question it.
So what should we ask it?
I have four questions, that’s it, just four, that will help you think through any passage you’re reading.
Is there an example here for me to follow?
Is there an example here for me to follow?
Is there an example here for me to follow?
Is there an example here for me to follow?
Is there a sin for me to confess?
Is there a truth for me to understand?
Is there a comfort for me to embrace?
Is there a truth for me to understand?
Is there a sin for me to confess?
Is there a sin for me to confess?
Is there a truth for me to understand?
Is there a comfort for me to embrace?
Is there a sin for me to confess?
Is there a truth for me to understand?
Is there a comfort for me to embrace?
Is there a comfort for me to embrace?
Is there a truth for me to understand?
Is there a comfort for me to embrace?
In a minute, I’m going to walk you through how to do this.
Pray It
Finally, you want to pray the word.
This means allowing the word to direct your prayers.
My kids can be very literal.
If you say I’m going to buy you a red ball with pink polka-dots and bring them a blue ball with Yellow polka-dots they will call you out on it.
One day, one of the boys asked me if we could do something.
I don’t remember what it was, but let’s say go to a movie.
I said, “We don’t have the money now, but I get paid on the 1st and we’ll go then.”
20 days later, that sweet child says, “are we going to the movies today?”
It was a Monday, so my response was, “No, it’s Monday!”
And they said, “You told me on the first we could go to the movies, you said it!”
So, I said, “We can’t today, but we will tomorrow” and we did.
He repeated back to me what I said, and so I did what he asked.
That’s how God is.
Go Through It:
Is there an example here for me to follow?
Is there a sin for me to confess?
Is there a truth for me to understand?
Is there a comfort for me to embrace?
