IMMANUEL
INTRODUCTION:
RONALD MCDONALD REPORT – IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY DONE SO…
POINT OUT CHRISTMAS READING ON THE BACK OF THE LISTENING GUIDE…
I’M GRATEFUL THIS MORNING FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO STAND AND SHARE THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS WITH YOU…
AND I AM GLAD THAT YOU ARE HEAR…
WE ARE LOOKING AT SOME OF THE TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE JESUS, AND THOUGH THE BIBLE CONTAINS MANY DIFFERENT TERMS, WHAT WE ARE LOOKING AT ARE TERMS RELATED DIRECTLY TO THE INCARNATION…
LAST WEEK, WE LOOKED AT JESUS DESCRIBED AS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD, AND THIS WEEK, I WANT US TO LOOK AT ANOTHER TERM USED IN REFERENCE TO THE BIRTH OF CHRIST…
IN , THE BIBLE SAYS…BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL CONCEIVE AND BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL (WHICH MEANS, GOD WITH US).
AND IN , WHICH IS WHAT WE WILL TAKE AS OUR TEXT FOR TODAY, WE SEE THE IDEA OF GOD WITH US REINFORCED…
SO TAKE YOUR COPY OF GOD’S WORD AND TURN WITH ME TO JOHN, CHAPTER 1, AND WHEN YOU’VE FOUND YOUR PLACE, STAND WITH ME AS WE READ THESE VERSES TOGETHER…
STAND – READ – PRAY
I WANT TO TAKE JUST A FEW MINUTES THIS MORNING TO POINT OUT A FEW TRUTHS WE FIND IN THIS PASSAGE IN JOHN’S GOSPEL…
HERE’S THE FIRST ONE…
1. CHRISTMAS MEANS THAT GOD IDENTIFIES WITH US.
a. – THE WORD BECAME FLESH
i. GOD BECAME HUMAN…
ii. THE CREATOR TOOK ON THE FORM OF THOSE HE CREATED…
iii. HE DIDN’T JUST CREATE AND THEN WALK AWAY…
iv. HE ACTIVELY ENGAGED WITH THOSE HE CREATED…
1. EVEN TODAY…THROUGH HIS HOLY WORD AND HIS HOLY SPIRIT, HE ACTIVELY ENGAGES WITH THOSE HE CREATED…
b. WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT ABOUT THE WORD BECOMING FLESH IS THAT IT REMINDS US THAT GOD, IN THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST, IDENTIFIES WITH US…
c. HE IS NOT SOME DISINTERESTED DEITY THAT VIEWS HIS CREATION AS A NUISANCE TO BE IGNORED…
i. HE IS A LOVING GOD, WHO DESIRES COMMUNION AND CLOSENESS WITH THOSE HE HAS CREATED…
ii. HE IS A GOD WHO LONGS FOR RELATIONSHIP WITH US…
d. IN BECOMING FLESH, GOD NOT ONLY EXPRESSES LOVE FOR HIS CREATION, BUT HE PROVES HIS LOVE FOR HIS CREATION…
i. SO THAT IT COULD TRULY BE SAID OF JESUS WHAT WE READ IN (ESV) 15 FOR WE DO NOT HAVE A HIGH PRIEST WHO IS UNABLE TO SYMPATHIZE WITH OUR WEAKNESSES, BUT ONE WHO IN EVERY RESPECT HAS BEEN TEMPTED AS WE ARE, YET WITHOUT SIN.
e. IN THE PERSON OF JESUS, GOD IDENTIFIES WITH US…
2. CHRISTMAS ALSO MEANS THAT GOD IS PRESENT.
a. – THE WORD BECAME FLESH, AND DWELT AMONG US…
i. DWELT MEANS “TO PITCH A TENT, OR TO TABERNACLE.”
ii. THERE IS SOME SIGNIFICANCE TO THIS IDEA OF GOD PITCHING HIS TENT WITH HUMANITY IN THE PERSON OF JESUS…
iii. THINK OF IT THIS WAY…
iv. CHRIST COULD HAVE BECOME FLESH, AND STILL REMAINED SEPARATE FROM HUMANITY…
1. HE COULD HAVE TAKEN ON AN ELEVATED POSITION IN THE HUMAN RACE…
v. BUT HE CHOSE TO PITCH A TENT WITH HUMANITY…
3. CHRISTMAS MEANS THAT WE HAVE WITNESSED THE GLORY OF GOD.
a. (ESV) - …AND WE HAVE SEEN HIS GLORY, GLORY AS OF THE ONLY SON FROM THE FATHER…
b. THIS TEXT MAKES IT ABSOLUTELY CLEAR THAT THE MISSION OF THE LOGOS WAS UNIQUE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.
c. THIS UNIQUENESS OF THE SON MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR CHRISTIANITY TO BE A SYNCRETISTIC RELIGION.
d. IN OUR MISSION TO THE WORLD WE CANNOT SAY “JESUS AND CAESAR” OR “JESUS AND BUDDHA,” AND SO FORTH.
e. OUR CONFESSION IS JESUS, THE ONE AND ONLY!
f. THE EARLY CHRISTIANS SUFFERED AND DIED BECAUSE THEY REFUSED TO RECOGNIZE ANY OTHER PATTERN THAN THAT WHICH WAS REVEALED IN JESUS CHRIST.
g. THEY SAW, AND WE SEE, THE GLORY OF GOD IN THE INCARNATE SON OF GOD…
4. CHRISTMAS MEANS THAT WE ARE BLESSED. (VERSE 16)
a. (ESV) – 16 FOR FROM HIS FULLNESS WE HAVE ALL RECEIVED, GRACE UPON GRACE.
i. OTHER TRANSLATIONS RENDER THIS VERSE IN DIFFERENT WAYS…
1. NIV: “ONE BLESSING AFTER ANOTHER”
2. KJV: “GRACE FOR GRACE”
3. LB: “BLESSING UPON BLESSING HEAPED UPON US”
4. NLT: “ONE GRACIOUS BLESSING AFTER ANOTHER”
ii. BUT THE MESSAGE IS THE SAME…
b. WE HAVE RECEIVED BLESSING AFTER BLESSING…GRACE UPON GRACE…ONE BLESSING AFTER ANOTHER…
c. BECAUSE OF THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST…
d. IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED CHRIST JESUS...
i. IF YOU KNOW HIM PERSONALLY…
ii. HAVE RECOGNIZED YOUR NEED FOR A SAVIOR…
1. REPENTED OF YOUR SINS…
2. TURN FROM YOUR SINS AND TURNED TO CHRIST ALONE FOR FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS AND SALVATION…
e. THEN YOU HAVE RECEIVED…ARE RECEIVING…BLESSING AFTER BLESSING…
i. THE BLESSING OF REDEMPTION AND SALVATION…
ii. THE BLESSING OF ETERNAL LIFE…
iii. THE BLESSING OF HIS PRESENCE AND ACTIVITY IN YOUR LIFE…
iv. THE BLESSING OF BEING PART OF HIS PLAN…
v. THE BLESSING OF SERVING HIM…
vi. AND ON AND ON AND ON…
f. IF YOU KNOW CHRIST, YOU ARE BLESSED…
CONCLUSION:
BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED CHRIST BY FAITH?
WELL, THERE IS GOOD NEWS FOR YOU AS WELL…
BECAUSE CHRISTMAS REMINDS US OF THE PERPETUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR FORGIVENESS…
BECAUSE THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG MEN…
SALVATION IS OFFERED FULLY AND FREELY STILL TODAY TO EVERY MAN, WOMAN, BOY, AND GIRL…
AND IF YOU ARE HERE TODAY, OR YOU ARE LISTENING TO THIS MESSAGE THROUGH OUR VIDEO FEED…
YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT CHRIST CAME TO REDEEM YOU FROM THE PENALTY OF YOU SIN…
- TO PAY A RANSOM YOU AND I COULD NOT PAY…
- HE TOOK YOUR SINS AND MY SINS UPON HIMSELF AND PROVIDED EACH OF US A WAY TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE…
- AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT YOUR FAITH IN HIM…
MAYBE THIS CHRISTMAS, YOU WILL RECEIVE THE GREATEST GIFT EVER GIVEN…
THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE, THROUGH THE REDEMPTIVE SACRIFICE OF JESUS CHRIST…
