I) Coming of the Messiah
God promised this day for generations – ; ; ; ;
When it came, it was a time for rejoicing as had never been seen before – ; , ,
His ministry brought great joy to Israel –
His resurrection made their joy complete – ; ; ,
This joy is for all – – our joy grows as we share it with others –
II) Why we don’t celebrate the birthday of Jesus
Significant days do affect the march of history (Magna Carta signing in June 15, 1215; July 4, 1776; December 7, 1941) and they are often memorialized in holidays or remembrances
Yet, we see no evidence that the early church did the same with the birth of Christ; there are no instructions for such a holy day, even though God gave very detailed instructions for Passover
So why is the coming of Christ different?
Nothing has affected the course of history more than the life of one God-man
Because the celebration of joy is ongoing, it cannot be limited to one day a year, or even one day a week (the Lord’s Supper is not a weekly religious holiday of His birth)
Jesus tells us that no one can take our joy from us – – that tells me this joy is abiding, it is the reason we can rejoice in tribulation, we can rejoice even as we weep – ;
Concl: Instead of sitting in judgment on those who celebrate only one day (even if they do so hypocritically), we should share the message of continuous celebration, both in our words, and in our attitudes and actions.
Joy to the world indeed!
