Story

Matthew 2:1–12 NIV
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Implication

How do you give the best Christmas gift ever? By answering two questions: (1) Who is the gift for? and (2) What is the best gift for that person?
“Who is the gift for?” Who is going to receive the greatest gift you can give this Christmas?
The Magi gave their greatest gifts to Jesus to celebrate His birth.

Observation

Who did the Magi give their gifts to? To Jesus. Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’s birth; it’s basically celebrating His birthday. But who gets gifts on their birthday? The person whose birthday it is!
We just celebrated Graham’s birthday, and gave him gifts...

Implication

If Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’s birth, we should give our greatest gifts to Jesus at Christmas.
But what can I give to Jesus? What do you give to someone who already has everything?
But if I’m going to give a gift to Jesus, I want it to be the greatest gift ever because Jesus is the greatest person ever.

sdfsa
But if I’m going to give a gift to Jesus, I want it to be the greatest gift ever because Jesus is the greatest person ever.
I asked at the beginning, “What’s the greatest gift you can give this Christmas?” Let me modify the question slightly.
What is the best gift you can give to Jesus this Christmas? What is the greatest Christmas present you can give to the Lord?

Conclusion

Conclusion

What do you give someone who already has everything?
Psalm 50:9–12 NIV
9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
Psalm 50:9-
The greatest gift you can give this Christmas is to give yourself to the Lord. The best Christmas present you can give is you—you can give your life to Jesus.
What does that mean?
Jesus takes your life, makes it new, gives it back, and says, “Now live this life for me.”

Conclusion

The greatest gift you can give this Christmas is to give yourself to the Lord. Will you give your life to Jesus?

Give instructions
If you belong to Christ, whether you made the decision to give your life to Jesus tonight or whether you’ve been a follower of Jesus for many years, you have a light in you. Those who belong to the Lord have the light of life shining in them. Let’s hold up our candles as we hear these words of Jesus, speaking about His light that shines in and through us.
Matthew 5:14–16 NIV
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Go and be the light of the world.
