Synopsis

God’s ultimate provision of peace is discovered in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

It is only through Christ that peace with God can be achieved and maintained.

Peace.

Total well-being, prosperity, and security associated with God’s presence among his people.

Linked in the OT with the covenant, the presence of peace, as God’s gift, was conditional upon Israel’s obedience.

In prophetic material, true peace is part of the end-time hope of God’s salvation.

In the NT, this longed-for peace is understood as having come in Christ and able to be experienced by faith.

Peace denotes the wholeness, soundness, and well-being that characterizes God and that God created in the world.

As peace was broken due to human sin, such well-being constitutes the hope for ultimate restoration by God.

Shalom! is probably the best known and most famous word in the Hebrew language.

But its meaning is broad and is translated seventy different ways in one translation alone (NIV).

Today, shalom is used to say “hello” or “good-bye.”

In the Bible, it is used three different ways in one verse to mean something like “success” (NIV), “peace” (KJV, NLT) and “prosperity” (NLT)!

This illustrates the fullness and richness of the word’s meaning.

The Hebrew translation of shalom is “completeness,” “wholeness,” “well-being,” or “welfare and peace.”

It is derived from a root that means “to be complete” or “to be sound.”

When shalom is best translated as “peace,” this peace is more than the mere absence of war or strife.

1-PEACE THROUGH THE FATHER

A- Peace in a believer’s relationship with the Father

If God is for us, who can be against us?

32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect?

It is God who justifies.

34 Who is he who condemns?

It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(NKJV) — 25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.

Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not of more value than they?

27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing?

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

(NKJV) — 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Provision of peace through Jesus Christ

(NKJV) — 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

(NKJV) — 6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

(NKJV) — 2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.” 3 Therefore He shall give them up, Until the time that she who is in labor has given birth; Then the remnant of His brethren Shall return to the children of Israel.

4 And He shall stand and feed His flock In the strength of the Lord, In the majesty of the name of the Lord His God; And they shall abide, For now He shall be great To the ends of the earth; 5 And this One shall be peace.

When the Assyrian comes into our land, And when he treads in our palaces, Then we will raise against him Seven shepherds and eight princely men.

(NKJV) — 9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!

Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; The battle bow shall be cut off.

He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.’

Through Jesus Christ’s teaching

(NKJV) — 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.

In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
