God is Glorious
Finally the day is here.
Today is the day we celebrate the fact that God is glorious!
There it is in v14

This is the one thing to remember this Christmas!
No more presents until you can recite this verse
Lot’s of things are great about Christmas,
but none as great as God.
What do you think is great about Christmas?
All those things are great,
but still nowhere near as great as God!
There are 3 parts to our passage from the bible today,
and they are all to do with things being unlikely.
1 - An unlikely birth!
2 - An unlikely people!
2 - Less than people, that are blessed
3 - An unlikely message!
And they are all unlikely becasue it shows
that it is only God who should
be praised and glorified
this and every Christmas.
1 - An unlikely birth!
Were would you expect a King to be born?
More than that, the Son of God who is King?
Where were you born?
Where was Jesus born?
It’s like the hospitals were full and your
mum had to give brith to you in a bus shelter.
But Jesus had to be born in Bethlehem.
Because that is where God had promised he would be born in the OT,
in Micah 5v2,
If I promised you a sweet at the end of the service
but then didn’t have any, what would you think?
SO, God promised Jesus would be born in Bethlehem,
hundreds of years earlier, so he made it happen!
All the people at that time had to return to their home town to be registered,
and Joseph was from Bethlehem.
That is why the town was so full.
It seems strange timing, but it was all in God’s plan.
Everyone had gone home - like a huge family get togetehr in a very small house!
It might sound unlikely,
but Jesus was born in a very normal human way.
There were problems, complications, stress and tiredness.
There were probably arguments -
I told you to fill up the donkey with petrol before we left we’d have been here earlier!
Well if you didn’t take so long doing your hair etc... - those sorts of things.
But this unlikely birth was unlikely, so that God’s plan would come together.
So we could glorify God! -Praise Him and thank him.
SO what happened next

But he didn’t did he, he told
2 - An unlikely people!
I worked with shepherds in Lesotho for 3 years.
They were not liked very much by everyone else!
Why do you think that was?

Odd - lived alone, isolated, sheep needed to be away from crops etc
SO why would God tell the most unlikely people about Jesus?
Because he wanted everyone to know that Jesus came to save everyone,
3 - An unlikely message!
from the smelliest to the cleanest!
A bit more than that
the bible continually makes it clear that
Jesus came to save the spiritually hungry,
the humble,
those that knew they needed God’s forgiveness and intervention.
Sadly, we think we can live life well on our own.
But we need to be like the shepherds.
Who know we are smelly on the inside -
and we need God to save us, to make us friends with him again.
And to accept the news about Jesus coming gladly.
And when we realise that it is all God’s work to save,
not our work to be good enough, who gets the glory?

And that’s our 3rd point.
3 - An unlikely message!
Who knows what the shepherds did after they visited the baby Jesus in the manger?
2 things!,
It’s such an unlikely message isn’t it.
God has come to earth, he’s born in a smelly manger
God tells this unlikely news to smelly unlikely people!
And then those unlikely people, tell the unlikely story to everyone they meet!
Why?
You don’t need to be
special,
amazing,
perfect,
well behaved,
good looking,
or smell nice this Christmas
(although all those things will be appreciated when you sit down for Christmas dinner!)
What you need is to believe the unlikely message,
told by unlikely people (like me),
about the unlikely birth of Jesus,
who came to save us.
