Title: The Example of the Shepards
Big Idea: Christians need to share the good news.
The Shepard’s Retreat (V.
8)
8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock.
Shepards were despised by the religious leaders, they were unable to keep the details of the ceremonial law; they could not observe all the meticulous handwashings and rules and regulations.
Their flocks made constant demands on them; and so the religious looked down on them.
It was to simple men of the fields that God’s message first came.
The fact that they were Dirty Because of there work added to the the fact that they were dispised.
The Bottom line is that Shepards were the bottom line of socioty
The Gospel first came to the Social Outcasts of Jesus’ Day.
Shepards symbolize those who care for God’s people.
2. The Sheep which were used for Temple Sacrifices in Jersulem were kept outside Bethlehm.
The Job of the shepards was to keep them safe, and that Job was much more important at night because of the heightened thret from theves and wild animals.
The Birth lickly took place in March and the shapards were preparing sheep for the Passover.
It is a wonderful thought that the shepards who look after the temple lambs were among the First to see the Lamb of God
The Angels Report (V.9-12)
9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lordshone around them, and they were terrified.[a]
10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:[b]
11 Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
12 This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.”
9.
The Statemnt “An angel of the Lord” Indicates a single angel.
“They were terified”The word terified stresses the intencety of the fear.
The word recalls that of Zacariah
it was not just the fact that an angel was present but also a visible manifestation of the Glory of God.
This was something that Zacaria or Marry did not experience.
10.
The Angel calmed the Shepards and informed them that they had wonderful News.
11.
Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
The statment “Today” indicates that it had just happened.
The Word Savior means anointed one, The angel came to proclaim the Gospel at the verry hour Christ was Born.
“For you a Savior”
The Shapards would have known the masses coming to Bethlehm for the cences would have been Davids Kin, this fulfilling the prophecy of the Birth of Christ.
12 This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.”
The Shepards would have been shocked that the savior was born to pesent parents and even morso that he was laying in a feeding trough
The words of the angel would help them recognize the baby, but it would also attest the truth of the angel’s words.
In Bethlehem that night there might be one or more babies wrapped in swaddeling clothes
The Angels Rejoicing (V.
13-14)
13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host[c] with the angel, praising God and saying:

“Peace on earth to the people He Favors” The term peace on earth tward people he favors gives the idea that those that follow God’s commands will have peace.
This however, does not mean if everyone just followed the Bible there would be no war or struggles since the world is plunged into sin.
It stresses that those who trust Christ will have peace in His glories Salvation “the people whoom God favors are those who have trusted Christ.”
